Biography

Cross of St George
John Cheyne Knt. was born in England.

John Cheyne was the son of Laurence Cheyne (or Cheney), Esq., by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of John Cokayne and Ida Grey. John was born about 1424 (aged 38 in 1462).[1]

John Cheyne, Knt., married Elizabeth Rempston before 1449. She was the daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Repmston, Knt., by Alice, daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Beckering. Elizabeth was born about 1418 (aged 40 in 1458).[1][2]

John and Elizabeth (Rempston) Cheyne had two sons and four daughters:[1]

  • Thomas Cheyne, Knt.
  • William Cheyne
  • Elizabeth Cheyne, married John Hasilden
  • Katherine Cheyne, married Henry Barlee, Esq.
  • Anne Cheyne, married John Appleyard
  • Mary Cheyne, married John Alington.[3]

Sir John Cheyne died 13 (or 14) July 1489.[2] His will, dated 31 July 1488, was proved 21 July 1489. In it, he requested to be buried at Barnwell Priory, Cambridgeshire.[1]

His heir was his son Thomas.[2]

Property

Mochettes
"Henry Cheyney, however, inherited its fee simple in right of his wife, who was probably George Muschet's daughter. (fn. 25) The manor was settled in 1377 on Henry's son Sir William Cheyney (d. 1399), whose widow Catherine held the manor in 1419. (fn. 26) It had passed by 1428 to Sir William Cheyney's son Lawrence (d. 1461). (fn. 27) In 1480 Lawrence's son and heir Sir John (d. 1489) granted Mochettes manor to his eldest son Sir Thomas, (fn. 28) who died in 1514. His daughter and heir Elizabeth brought the manor by her marriage to Thomas Vaux (b. 1509), later 2nd Lord Vaux of Harrowden. (fn. 29) Thomas and Elizabeth both died in 1556, and the manor passed to their son and heir William. (fn. 30) On his death in 1595, it descended to his grandson Edward, Lord Vaux, who sold it in 1619 to Thomas Willys (d. 1626). (fn. 31) The manor thereafter formed part of the Fen Ditton estate."[4]
Manor of Hokes
"B. 241. John Edward', brother and heir of Thomas Gloucester', having demised to Ralph, Lord Sudeley, John, Lord Beauchamp, Richard Neuton, knight, John Fray and others, and to Robert Cooke the manors of Baas, Perers, Geddynges, Langtons, Foxton', Marions and Halles, with their appurtenances in Brokesborne, Hoddesdon, Cheshunt, Amwell, Wurmeley, and elsewhere co. Hertford, and also the manor of Hokes co. Essex, which had descended to him upon the death of his said brother, and the same having been subsequently demised at his request by the said Robert Cooke to William Say, Andrew Oughgard, John Say, Laurence Cheyne, Philip Boteler, John Cheyne, and William Port, he thereupon granted a release of his right to the said manors, &c., to the last named parties. 28 August, 26 Henry VI. [1447]"[5]
Stapleford Manor
"This Manor, I guess, was afterwards divided between two Daughters and Coheirs of the Bardolfs ; whereof one married Patchington, from whom her Share was called Patchington and the other Sister's Part was termed Waterford from the Situation thereof; both which Manners were afterwards conveyed to Sir John Say, Kt, and Thomas Leventhorp, Esq. who by their Deed dated the 26th of October, 14 Edw. IV. granted it to George Newport, Esq. Son and Heir of William Newport, Esq. and Hugh Clayton, who by their Deed dated the 6th of November, in the same Year, conveyed them to Sir John Say, Sir John Cheiny, and Sir John Heningham, Knights ; William Allington of Botesham, John Ansley, William Allington Son of John Allington, John Battesford, Ralph Baud, Thomas Leventhorp, Henry Langley of Rickling in Essex ; Henry Lollingsworth, in the County of Cambridge, Esq. Henry Turnor, Ade Ulier, Rector of Westmill, and John Hamond, and their Heirs."[6]

Cheney-416 and Cheyne-403 appear to represent the same person because: Same person because son Thomas is given as son of Elizabeth Rempston in visitations. Would prefer earlier dob as John is only son noted in the visitation implying he is eldest son. Probably only get a date if we find his father's Inquisition

Cheyne-403 and Cheney-416 are not ready to be merged because: Need to check DOB

Cheyne-403 and Cheney-416 appear to represent the same person because: Can these be merged, or did he have two sons named John?
