Biography

The Crocker family is believed to be one of the most ancient in Devon, reputedly of Anglo-Saxon origin, very rare for English gentry who mostly descend from Norman invaders who took part in the Norman Conquest of 1066. According to "that old saw often used among us in discourse", the traditional rhyme related by Prince (d.1723):[7]

"Crocker, Cruwys, and Coplestone, When the Conqueror came were at home"

Hello, Charles. I descend from Thomas Crocker who settled at New London, Connecticut in 1658 and married Rachel Chappell. Thomas b.1633 is most likely the son of Sir Hugh Crocker and Elizabeth Colleton of Exeter, Devon, England. My theory is that some of Hugh's children went to Barbados with their uncle, Sir John Coleton, following the fall of Exeter to the Roundheads. Hugh's daughter Sarah is recorded as living with Sir John on Barbados and is included in his will. There is a Thomas Crocker on Nevis in 1657. There is a ship record of a Thomas Crocker from Barbados to Virginia in 1558. There is a Thomas Crocker that left Plymouth Colony in 1658 headed to New London. Connecticut. He was a man of means, purchased property in New London in 1660 and was granted land in the Connecticut Charter. We have tested my father's Y-DNA and have a match with another Crocker tested. His descent was from William and ours from Samuel, brothers and sons of Thomas. We now know Thomas' Y-DNA. I have found a tree that goes back to a Stephen Crocker b. 1613 at Alverdiscott, Devon, England. Supposedly, Stephen is an ancestor to your lineage. I have an autosomal match to a Crocker family that claims descent from the aforementioned Stephen Crocker. I have studied subject tree and find no other colonial matches in North America. This leads me to think that the connection is in Devon. If the tree mentioned is correct and my lineage is correct, there is a blood connection between me and the wife of Stephen Crocker, Jane Poole / Pole. She is reported to be my 11th cousin 9 times removed. I have not determined the ancestry of Stephen Crocker and whether he connects to Sir Hugh Crocker's family. My father's Y-DNA does not match that of Deacon William Crocker of Barnstable, Massachusetts or any other Crocker tested other than the late genealogist Albert R. Crocker. I have attempted to contact persons in the tree claiming Stephen, but to no avail.

Charles, I noticed your message on William "Tailor" Poole merge. I have researched this line for over 40 years and there is so many errors in this person it should all be deleted and started over. William's descendants have a document that asks for relatives to come to England and settle the Estate of William's father. William's father was a Sea Captain. On one of the trips he brought his son William and left him with friends while he returned to England to get the rest of the family. His father never returned and pieces of his ship washed ashore. Therefore, it was assumed that his family was killed in this accident. William is not the son of Thomas and Obedience as William was 2 years younger than Obedience. This family moved to Lebanon TN and are buried there. William and Elizabeth {Stovall} Poole are buried at Ebenezer Baptist Cemetery in Spartanburg CO SC.
