"Very early in the history of Orange County, N. Y., Eleazer Gedney, a gentleman of considerable means, having business relations in France and England, moved from the "Saw Pits" [today Port Chester, Westchester Co., New York] to the town of Newburgh [Orange Co., New York]. Here he purchased thirteen hundred acres of land, settled four of his sons upon it, and built a house for each, colonizing the district known as "Gidneytown." This first settler had his four houses framed at "Saw Pit," transported them and set them upon the thirteen hundred acres. After this was accomplished he went to France on personal business, where he died. Before leaving the country, he had made a large purchase of land at New Haven, now covered in part by that city, which was lost to the family by his death." [1]
