Biography

"Very early in the history of Orange County, N. Y., Eleazer Gedney, a gentleman of considerable means, having business relations in France and England, moved from the "Saw Pits" [today Port Chester, Westchester Co., New York] to the town of Newburgh [Orange Co., New York]. Here he purchased thirteen hundred acres of land, settled four of his sons upon it, and built a house for each, colonizing the district known as "Gidneytown." This first settler had his four houses framed at "Saw Pit," transported them and set them upon the thirteen hundred acres. After this was accomplished he went to France on personal business, where he died. Before leaving the country, he had made a large purchase of land at New Haven, now covered in part by that city, which was lost to the family by his death." [1]

There is a Gedney burying-place near Mamaroneck, on the west side of the river. it contains the graves of some of the oldest inhabitants of the town. Eleazer Gedney of the family in Rye, New York, 'born in Boston Government' who died 27 Oct 1722 and the father of Eleazer Gedney is buried here. [2]

Gedney-28 and Gedney-128 appear to represent the same person because: I created a duplicate due to the varied spelling of his name. Would you please help me merge. Thanks.
