LAUGHTONDALE. DEATH OF MRS. J. W. LAUGHTON. It is with feelings of the deepest sorrow that I have to record the death of a highly esteemed local citizen in the person of Mrs. J. W. Laughton, who passed away very suddenly at about 9 p.m. on the 1st instant, after an illness of only 36 hours. The cause of death was pericardial pleurisy, followed by heart failure. Dr. Allsop, of Windsor, was in attendance, and did all that could possibly be done for her. Mrs. Laughton, whose maiden name was Eliza Gill, was a daughter of the late William Gill, of the Manning River, and was 62 years of age. She married 44 years ago the late Captain J. W. Laughton, and came to live on the Hawkesbury immediately after her marriage. The deceased lady's brothers are, Godfrey, of Richmond River, Fred, of Macleay River, and Will and Alex., both of the Manning River. The sisters are, Mrs. David Laughton, of Lower Hawkesbury, and Mrs. Manwearn, of Sydney. Her children are, Morse (only son), and Mrs. F. Millward, of Manly, Mrs. J. Fawcett, also of Manly, Mrs. F. Lockrey, of Newtown, and Miss May of Laughtondale. The funeral, which took place on Friday at midday, was a large and representative one, people coming from all parts of the Hawkesbury and from Sydney. The deceased lady's remain were laid to rest in the Methodist portion of the Wiseman's Ferry cemetery. The Rev. J. Scharkie officiated at the graveside. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr. Percy Chandler, of Windsor. The deceased lady had acted as Postmistress at Laughtondale ever since its inception as a post office. She was very popular, and a great favorite with old and young on account of her kindly disposition, and her place will be very hard to fill morally and socially. To the bereaved family, who have lost the care of a fond and loving, mother, we tender our sincerest sympathy. |
