Jeremiah married Mary Wiseman (born on February 16, 1760 in Rowan County, Colony of North Carolina; daughter of Jacob Wiseman and Elizabeth (Henderson) Wiseman).

Jeremiah and Mary's children were, in addition to an unnamed daughter:

  1. Jeremiah Green (1774-1820)
  2. Isaac Greene (1776-1855) married Mary Booth in 1793, They lived between Sands and Moretz Mills, and are buried in the Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery.
  3. Enoch Greene (1778-1837), married Elizabeth Booth, a sister of Mary above, and second, in 1811, Lucy Harwood, a widow. I believe this is the same Enoch who died ca 1848 in Bibb County, Georgia.
  4. Joanna (Greene) Hartley (1781-1857), married Reuben Hartley in 1798 and lived in Watuaga County.
  5. Jeremiah b 1782, married Katherine Hagaman in 1804. They moved to Buncombe County where he died in 1844.

  10. Joseph, b ca 1800-1804, married Nancy about 1828. Joseph died soon after, leaving one son, Joseph, b ca 1820 married Elizabeth Wilson in 1848.
  11. Silas Greene (1808 - 1889)

Jeremiah and Mary moved to what is now Watuaga County between 1790-1800.

Research Notes

  • Jeremiah Greene was born about 15 February 1755 but other documents recorded 13 and 17 February as well. His death is recorded as 27 August 1839, but 30 and 31 August were also found.
  • Note on the spelling of Name Green. Greene/Green is an old name going back to both Irish and Anglo-Saxon times. This name "is usually of Olde English and Anglo-Saxon pre 7th century origins, and derives from the word "grene" meaning the color green as in a meadow or field [5] What I have found doing research is that the further back that you go, the "e" and the end is common placed, and in more modern times, the final "e" is left off. Spelling variations were common as the English language was developing (see House of Names), and there are many people that have the name with the final "e" (see Wikipedia article)
  • In WikiTree, rightly or wrongly, Jeremiah's lineage has the final "e" included. On his tombstone erected by the DAR in modern times, the final "e" has been left off. ("Green" on stone erected by DAR) but the find a grave memorial has been deleted. It is also left off in the pdf version of the Southern Campaigns Revolutionary War Pension Statements & Rosters.[6] However, in the History of Watauga County, it lists his name with the final "e". [7] This work is from the early 20th Century references work back even into the 19th Century. My best guess is that his name most likely had the final "e", but that it had been dropped in modern times. This is a guess and not a statement of fact. (author unknown).

Regarding the John Green (c 1784 - 1862) listed above under children who married a "Hagaman" and moved to Tennessee, that Hagaman was "Sarah" who was sister to "Katherine" who married John's brother, Jeremiah (1782 - 1844). Both Hagaman sisters who married Green brothers were daughters of Joseph Hagaman (c 1764 - 1840).
Regarding Research Notes and comments regarding the correct spelling of Green vs. Greene. I was born a "Green" and was told by my father that the family originally used the Greene spelling but dropped it at some point.

Greene-3798 and Green-19137 do not represent the same person because: Green-19137 states in the biography that this Jeremiah is the son of Isaac instead of Jeremiah Sr. married to Joanna Hunt. The profile at top refers to Jeremiah Jr. born in 1755 in the Jeremiah Greene (Greene-3798). From the perspective of Greene-3798 they Green-19137 must be rejected. The Green-19137 profile should be modified if possible to reflect the data associated with the intended child of Isaac as that biography is not suitable for a merge with Greene-3798.
Can someone comment on the existence of two sons,, both named Jeremiah.

* The first is a Jeremiah, b. 1771, d. 1820. married Sarah Anne Hartley

  • The second is Jeremiah b.1782, d, 1841. married Katherine Hagaman

Back in June of 2021, I linked the names of the children to existing profiles based on the birth year, but I did not add or change any children. it appears one of the Jeremiahs was added based on a Find-A-Graved memorial that no longer exists.

The Jeremiah Green who was married to Anne Hartley and died in Hawkins Co, TN was the son of Richard Green (c 1740- c1818) and Eleanor/Ellender Sullivan. Richard was the brother of Jeremiah Green (1755-1839).

The Jeremiah Green (1782-1844) who was married to Katharine Hagaman in 1804 was the son of Jeremiah Green (1755-1839).

It has taken me years of research to sort out the Jeremiah Greens and to differentiate the Rowan, NC Greens from Chatham Co,NC Greens.

Scott, Nice additions, You might want to change AND to AT in sentence 2 of Note on spelling of name. Thank you for being so responsive. Hope my 2 new changes meet with your approval.

Scott, I am still not entirely clear on the Jeremiah Green(s). I just figured out what your source Rev War Apps means. Would it work for you to use the exact title of those Pension Applications as the source and mark them in the bio as <ref></ref> ?

Also could you make a comment in the bio re the discrepancy between the spelling Green and Greene. Thanks for your help.

Hi Scott, I am trying to sort out the Jeremiahs. You have done a lot of research and I am wondering if there was a source that showed him as a Reverend? Or one that gave his middle initial as W. Thanks for your help.
