Biography

Richard Hall was born in 1620 in England, a son of John Hall and Esther _______; he died at Middletown, Connecticut, March 27, 1691.[1][2] (Note: Edmund West suggests his birthdate was June 5, 1620 in England, the son of John Hall and Esther Ann Willocke, for which there are no sources.)

Richard Hall was a landowner; he had lands recorded in Middletown, Connecticut, June 9, 1654. He was a son of John Hall, born 1620 in England.[3]

He married Mary _____ by 1646 or 1648 at Middletown, Connecticut.[4] Another source gives the place they were married as Hartford.[3]

Known children of Richard and Mary were:[5]

  1. Mary, born about 1643 (not in NEHGR); married first Anthony Martin March 7, 1600[6]
  2. John, born Sept 20, 1648
  3. Jane, born March 1652-3
  4. Sarah, born May 1654
  5. Richard, born June 1656 not mentioned in father's Will
  6. Samuel, born September 1658
  7. Anna, born November 20, 1661

He died on March 27, 1691 in Middletown, Connecticut. Mary Hall, his wife, died March 30, 1691.[5][7][8] His death is also recorded in Dorchester, Mass. on the same date. [9]

Richard Hall's Last Will & Testament is dated 11 January 1689/90. In it he mentions wife Mary who he provides for in her remaining life and comfort. He makes son John Hall Executor. Also mentioned is son Samuel, daughters Mary, Jane, Sara and Anna. [10]

On a document dated 2 April 1691 is recorded his estate inventory appraisal which was submitted to the probate court by "Decon John Hall", "Samuel Collins" and "William Cheny". The financial value of the estate was set at L432.11.00. [10]

Research Notes

His Find-A-Grave memorial includes a photograph of an old New England gravestone with badly worn name and dates which aren't discernable.

In-line Citations #11 - 15 the sources apply to another Richard Hall as discussed below:

  • Both Mary Anthony and Elizabeth Collicot lived into the 1690s. So, there must be two different men named Richard Hall. According to this source, it was Richard Hall of Dorchester who married Elizabeth Collier. His parents are not shown.[11]
  • Elizabeth Collciot was baptized on 22 Feb 1628/29 in Barnstaple, Devonshire, England, the daughter of Richard Collicot. She married Richard Hall by 1648.[12][13]
  • There is a Richard Hall who immigrated to Massachusetts in 1639. [14] [15]

This is a souce given in GMD p. 147 for the John Hall, 1640 migration to Hartford, Middletown.

Richard b 1620, d Mar 27, 1691 at Middletown, Wife Mary died there Mar 30, 1691.

I have found no source for Mary Rebecca Anthony (Hall). It is my belief that Mary Rebecca Anthony should be merged away into Mary Unknown.

I am going to merge Mary Anthony into Mary Unknown. The only "sources" I can find for her last name of Anthony are Our Royal, Titled, Noble, and Commoner Ancestors & Cousins with no citations, and Society of Middletown First Settlers Descendants which cites two sources - Middletown Vital Records, and Barbour Collection Vital Records. There is no entry in Barbour that I can find for Richard Hall and Mary's marriage supposedly on February 11, 1645 at Hartford. The Middletown Vital Records are only available as originals or on microfilm, only at Middletown, Connecticut Library or City Hall. Torrey cites quite a few sources, and he ended up with Mary ________, so likely no last names were shown. Both of first two "sources" report that Mary Anthony was the daughter of John Anthony, who, per quality sources had no daughter Mary.

Richard married Mary ____. Torrey says HALL, Richard (1620-1691) & Mary ____, (-1691); by 1646, so source listed for wife is wrong. And of course Edmund West, comp.. Family Data Collection is unreliable.

Looking again, I think that Richard Hall of Dorchester is the one married to Elizabeth Collicott. He was made free there in 1644 and his will was probated 25 May 1691. Any objections to trying to separate out these two different Richards?

Other than Edmund West Data Collection, is there any evidence that Richard Hall, immigrant to Dorchester was the son of the attached parents.

Hall-22943 and Hall-3772 appear to represent the same person because: exact same spouse on both profiles, son Richard on both profiles, similar birth info, similar death info, duplicated children will need to be merged next. Thank you for reviewing. Teresa (WikiTree Arborist)
