Biography

Israel Hamblen was born June 25, 1652, the son of James Hamblen and Ann Scott of Barnstable, Massachusetts[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]. He is named in his father's will, dated January 23, 1683 [3]

His first wife was Abigail, who is believed to be a daughter of Joshua Lombard[2] [3], and their children included[6] [7]:

  1. A child, who was born and died in 1687[2] [3] [6] [7]
  2. Thankful, born 24th Aug., 1689[6] [7], who married her cousin Ebenezer Hamblen, son of John Hamblen and Sarah Bearse[2] [3]
  3. Prudence, born October 31 (last of October ), 1692[6] [7], who married Joseph Gates of Preston[2] [3].
  4. Israel, born 15th March, 1694[6] [7][3] , who married Dorcas Godfrey of Yarmouth[8]. While one source indicates he then married Bahsheba Baker[2], it seems more likely that his wife died before remarrying, and their son Israel married Bathsheba Baker[8] [9]
  5. Joseph, born September 12, 1697[6] [7] [4], who married Abigail Davis, daughter of Jabez[2] [3]
  6. Jemima, 15th Aug., 1699[2] [3] [6] [7] [4]

Israel's first wife died circa 1700, and his second wife was named Jemima, last name unknown[2] [3]. Their children included:

  1. Jacob, born 28th May, 1702[6] [7], married Content Hamblen and moved to Gorham Maine[2] [3] [10]
  2. Ann, born 10th April, 1706[6] [7], who married a Mr. Tilson and moved to Middleboro.[2] [3].

He was granted 270 acres in 1699, and sold land to Joseph Lumbert[11]. He live in the east parish, near Israel's pond, which is named after his son, on Dimmock's lane, about a mile and a half south of the County road. His nearest neighbor was more than half a mile distant. He is referred to as Mr, which implies influence, so it is thought he was more than a simple farmer, but the details are not known[3]

Israel Hamblen's estate was inventoried on July 2, 1729[3], and was oddly signed by Abigail Hamblen now Barlow, Israel's widow[12]. This has led to questions about Israel's spouse(s), and speculation that Jemima's name on 2 children's birth records was an error, or that perhaps there was a third wife, also named Abigail. There is a record for an Abigail (Davis) Hamblen, daughter of Jabez Davis and widow of Joseph Hamblen, who married John Barlow in 1730, too late for this to be the same Abigial. The record loss in Barnstable County sometimes leads to an incomplete story.

Isreal Hamblen was born Before. 25 jun 1652 in Barnstable, MA. He married twice.

first wife was Abigail Lombard married about 1687 in Barnstable. They had Six children all born in Barnstable. Infant 1687 died 1687 Thankful daughter 24 Aug 1689 to 15 Jan 1768 Prudence daughter born Oct of 1692 Israel born 15 mar 1693/94 Joseph 12 sep 1697 Jemima daughter 15 Aug 1699

His second wife was Jemima Hamblen two children born in Barnstable Jacob 28 May 1702 Ann 10 Apr 1706

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Israel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Israel:

Hamblen-336 and Hamblen-22 appear to represent the same person because: These two records and Lombard-1468 Lumbert-60 need to be combined.

Abaigal Lombard did not marry John Whiston so John Whiston and Children need to removed. This can only be done by someone who has approval to change records before 1700.

I would like to ask the PMs to read and comment on the G2G discussion thread on Israel Hamlin. Did he actually have two wives?
