Biography

James was a natural son of James Hamilton, 1st earl of Arran. His date of birth is unknown, but he was first mentioned in a charter in 1539 as the brother of Sir James Hamilton of Finnart.[1] He became the bishop of Argyll on 14 July 1553,[1][2] > and also held the sub-deanery of Glasgow.[1] In 1560 he became a member of the Protestant party.[1]

Bishop Hamilton died intestate 6 January 1580 at Old Monkland, and an inventory of his estate was completed by his lawful son, William Hamilton, burgess of Canongate.[1] The name of his wife is not known.
