Biography

By Marshall G. Brown-Cousin of Charles W. Harvey -WikiTree- Harvey-2679

NOAH HARVEY, son of Rezin and Elizabeth Queen Harvey; was born near Elk Garden in Hampshire County, now Mineral County, West Virginia, July 1, 1811, and died at his home in Ryan's Glade, Garrett County, Maryland, Feb.27, 1888. He married Nov., 29, 1832, Sarah Wilson, daughter of Thomas III and Susan Bowman Wilson. She was born Nov., 3, 1809, and died March 21, 1884. Noah Harvey was one of four sons of Rezin and Elizabeth Queen Harvey to marry daughters of Thomas III and Susan Bowman Wilson. He and his brother Elisha, and Sarah and Hester Ann Wilson eloped and were married. After their marriage Noah and Sarah lived for some time in Hampshire County. In the 1840 Federal census for Hampshire County, Noah Harvey was listed as head of a family of five.1 On July 30, 1844, Noah Harvey bought from John Hoye for $95.96, Military Lots No. 190 and 192 in Allegany now Garrett County, Maryland. Each contained fifty acres. He probably moved to Allegany County, now Garrett County about that time. This property was part of a tract called White's Hospitality and was located about midway between the White Methodist Church and Steyer, Md. Noah Harvey did not get a deed to the property at the time of purchase, and indeed until some time later. Mr. Hoye died in 1849 before ever executing a deed, which really caused a problem for Mr. Harvey. This problem was finally resolved by a deed made on May 22, 1872, This deed and the circumstances surrounding it are so unusual that the deed will be quoted in full.

"At the request of Noah Harvey this Deed was recorded July 11, 1872.

"This deed made this 22nd day of May in the year eighteen hundred and seventy-two, by me George Smith of A, Executor of the Last Will and Testament of John Hoye late of Allegany County in the State of Maryland deceased. Witnesseth: whereas the said John Hoye in his lifetime and on the 30th day of July 1844 sold unto Noah Harvey of said county and state all those lots, pieces or parcels of land, lying and being in said Allegany County and state of Maryland which are known & distinguished as soldiers Lots number one hundred ninety (190) and number one hundred and ninety-two (192), the said lots being a part of a survey called White's Hospitality and containing fifty acres of land each at and for the sum of ninety-five dollars and ninety-six cents, and executed a Bond of Conveyance to the said Noah Harvey for the same. And whereas the said John Hoye departed this life sometime during the year 1849 leaving a Last Will and Testament and before executing a deed of conveyance to the said Noah Harvey for the said Lots, pieces or parcels of land, and Letters Testamentary on the Estate of the said John Hoye dec'd were granted on the 5th day of July 1849 by the Orphans' Court of said county unto the said George Smith of A, and where-as upon the Petition of the said Noah Harvey and the accompaning evidence the Orphans' court of Allegany County aforesaid on the 7th day of May 1872, adjudged, ordered and decreed that the said George Smith of A. Executor aforesaid convey by deed in fee simple unto the said Noah Harvey the said Soldier's lots, nunber one hundred and ninety and one hundred and ninety-two. The said Court being fully satisfied that the whole of the purchase money therefore has been paid, and therefore in consideration of the premises and under and by virtue of the power and authority vested in me by the Last Will and Testament of the Said John Hoye deceased, I George Smith of A., Executor of the Last Will and Testament of the deceased do grant unto the said Noah Harvey in fee simple all those lots, pieces or parcels of land lying and being in said Allegany County and state of Maryland which are known and distinguished as Soldier's Lots number one hundred and ninety (190) and one hundred and ninety-two (192) containing fifty acres of land each. Witness my hand and seal." Teste George Smith of A (Seal) John Mower Extr of John Hoye, deceased

Noah and Sarah Wilson Harvey continued to live on this property for the remainder of their lives. The mother of the writer has described Noah Harvey as a person with sandy hair, about five feet ten inches in height and weighing about one hundred and seventy pounds. Both Noah and Sarah Wilson Harvey were buried in the Harvey-Wilson Family Cemetery which was located on their farm.

Upon the death of Sarah Wilson Harvey the following obituary appeared in The Republican, March 29, 1884:

"Died in Ryan's Glade settlement, March 21, 1884, Sarah, wife of Noah Harvey, aged 75 years and some months. The funeral services took place at the home of the deceased. She was a loving wife and fond mother. The large concourse of people that followed her remains to the grave showed how she was honored by all who knew her. She lived a consistent Christian for 35 years or more and came to the grave in ripe old age. She rests from her labors. Our loss is her gain." Submitted by Am. M. Bowlin

Noah Harvey, like most of the early Harveys, made no will.
