Research Notes

In the Notes for Nathan Brigham, the reference document addressed the conflicting account between Elizabeth Howe and Elizabeth Maynard as Nathan's wife. The matter was settled and determined that Elizabeth Howe was not his wife. Nathan Brigham and his children were therefore removed from this profile.

Made several edits to correct the Biography. The lead-in statement was both incorrect and misplaced. I attempted to follow the profile's basic format, however, if these edits are unacceptable, please feel free to restore it. I would only add a cautionary note that the original lead in was incorrect.

And for another point of view, I never use the Massachusetts Bay Colony or Province of Massachusetts Bay forms. I just list Massachusetts, along with the town and county, where appropriate. It may not be as historically complete, but it is not wrong. But don't let me discourage you from using the longer forms.

Have you seen the interactive county maps at http://www.mapofus.org/massachusetts/ ? It shows the changes to county lines through the years and you can choose to play the map sequence and see a legend summarizing each change.

By Elizabeth's birth, Marlborough was part of Middlesex County which was founded May 10, 1643. Back then, Massachusetts was formally known as Massachusetts Bay Colony. By the time of her death and since 1691, it became the Province of Massachusetts Bay.
