Biography

John was born about 1720. His father, Thomas Jarnagin, owned land in Chowan County, North Carolina in 1720, but a 1722 deed states he was a resident of Nansemond County, Virginia Colony at the time. So it is likely that John was born in Virginia.

John is reported to have served in the Revolutionary War. He is usually given the title Colonel. No evidence has been found for this service, and no reason can be found for this title.

It has been impossible to find any documentation for this John Jarnagin. Historical Southern Families by John Bennett Boddie lists Thomas Jernigan, but the only son he gives for him is Thomas, Jr. who removed to South Carolina.[1] North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register by James R. B. Hathaway has nothing on John, although it does include his father and other members of the Jernigan/Jarnagin family.

There is a John Jernigan in Johnston County, North Carolina on the 1784 early census index,[2] but this appears to be a different John; perhaps a descendant of David Jarnigan, son of John Jarnagin and Temperance Moore. He is also not the John Jernigan living in Grainger County, Tennessee around 1800.

The only source given for many family trees is a document which is posted on docstor.com. It states: "Name of Colonel John Jarniagan of VA submitted by Mrs. Lawrence Foster, 734 E. 2nd Street, Morristown, TN. Source: Jernigan Reunion by Lillian Jernigan Worley: pg. 213." If anyone has access to "Jernigan Reunion," perhaps the information from that source can be added here. This document lists John's wife, Mary Bynum, and three sons: Thomas, William and John.

It is not accurate to list this as an "unsourced" profile, as there is an extensive assessment of the previous genealogical research on John Jarnagin. An unsourced profile contains no sources whatsoever. The description of the previous genealogy research on John Jarnigan contains detailed references to sources that could be revisited by future researchers.

Jarnagin-18 and Jarnagin-130 appear to represent the same person because: My John Jarnagin (Jarnagin-130) was a duplicate of yours. Please merge mine into yours.

Jarnagin-18 and Journegin-2 appear to represent the same person because: Alternate spelling of last name, so it did not come up automatically.

Jarnagin-115 and Jarnagin-18 appear to represent the same person because: Both same birth dates, married to Mary Bynum, father of Capt. Thomas Jarnagin.
