Biography

Hans Junge has German Roots.

Birth and Parents

Hans Junge was born in Germany in 1832[1] in July,[2] his headstone reads (translated from German) "Died 27 May 1903 age 71 years".[3] It is possible Hans was born on 15 Jul 1832 in Nortorf, Holstein, the son of Meves Junge and Maria Rohwedder, and baptized on 1 Aug 1832 (see photo of possible baptism record attached to this profile).

Marriage and Children

Hans married Gesche Dolling on 22 Feb 1856 in Holstein,[1][3] possibly in Wilster, Steinberg (marriage place needs verification). Hans and Gesche Junge had thirteen children as follows, all born in Germany:[1][3]

Immigration

Hans, age 51, arbeiter (worker), a resident of Landsheide, Holstein, emigrated from Germany with his family: Gesche 46, Maria 18, Gesche 17, Peter 14, Anna 9, Lena 8, Heinrich 4, and Emma 6 months. They departed from Hamburg, Germany on 24 May 1883 aboard the "Polaria" with Captain Haberlandt, and arrived in New York City[4] on 13 Jun 1883.[5][6] Their older children, Mewes, Margaretha, John and Hans also emigrated from Germany,[1] but separately from their parents.

The family settled in Iowa and were enumerated on the 1885 Iowa Census, at their residence in Leroy, Benton County, Iowa.[7] Hans became a naturalized citizen of the United States at the Benton County District Court in Vinton, Iowa[1] on 10 Jun 1890.[8]

1900 • Kane, Benton, Iowa, USA - Junge household: Hans 66, Gesche 62, Henry 24, and Emma 17.[10]

Death

Hans Junge died on 27 May 1903 in Keystone, Iowa at age 71[1][11] and was buried at Keystone Cemetery, Keystone, Benton County, Iowa.[3]

His obituary was published in "The Every Other Daily Union", Belle Plaine, Iowa on Tuesday, 2 Jun 1903:[12]

Hans Junge
"Hans Junge died at his home twelve miles southeast of Dysart Wednesday morning, after an illness of one week with paralysis. Deceased was born in Holstein, Germany, in 1832 and twenty years ago came to America with his family and located in Benton County, Iowa, where he has since resided. Several grown children reside in this locality. Mr. Junge was well known in the county where he lived for a score of years and was universally respected. The funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon at one o'clock, Rev. H Christiansen conducting the same. Interment in Keystone cemetery."
