Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Johann Jacob (Kinser) Kinzer was a Virginia colonist.

Johann Jacob Kinser was born in 1709 in the Duchy of Zweibrucken, Saarland, Germany (Hirstein near Wolfersweiler). He was a son of Bernhard Kinser (1689-1740) and Catherine Seibert (1689-1752).

Immigration: 30 Aug 1737 arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship Samuel. On the ship passenger list, he is Johann Jacob Kintzer. On the list of immigrants who took the oath of allegiance, he is Jacob Kinser, age 28--i.e., born in 1709. NOTE: on the same passenger list is a Jacob Kuntz, who is sometimes mis-attributed as the person represented by this profile.

10 May 1744. Johann Jacob married Anna/Hanna Neumann (1717-1803) at Christ's Lutheran Church, Tulpehocken Township, Lancaster, Pennsylvania (today: Berks County)[1] Anna was a daughter of Walter Newman and Elizabeth Seidel. She was born Abt. 1724 in possibly Cecil Co, MD or Lancaster Co, PA, and died 02 Feb 1803 in Tates Run, Wythe Co, VA.[2]The couple had the following children:

  1. Walter (1746-1828) b. 21 Sep 1746, Lancaster Co., PA; d. 01 Jun 1828, Russell Co., VA. m Dorthea Barbara Brandstetter (1750-1820)
  2. Elizabeth (1748- aft. 1769) b. 05 Feb 1749/50, Lancaster Co, PA; d. Bef. 12 Oct 1844, Wythe Co, VA. m Johann Frederick Moore (1738-1768)
  3. Michael (1751-1808) m Catherine Elizabeth Kettering (1760-1848)
  4. Mary Martha (1754-1830)
  5. Jacob (1756-1816)
  6. Michael (1758-1822)
  7. John Peter (1763-1843)
  8. George (1764-1851)
  9. Anna Sibylla (1765-1833)
  10. Frederick (1766-1833) m Catherine Crigger (~1760-1820)

He died 1775 in Tates Run, Montgomery (Wythe) Co, VA.

Research Notes

The person represented by this profile is sometimes conflated with a John Jacob Kinser, who was born 2 Feb 1708 in Germany and died 26 Jan 1783 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. According to Garman's "On the Far Side of the Sea", this man is said to have arrived on the ship Saint Andrew Galley. More details about this person can be found at Find A Grave: Memorial #26237845

There remain a number of discrepancies about this person among the sources. Was he born on 25 Sep 1709 or 25 Jan 1709 (as is stated at FindAGrave)? The FindAGrave memorial cites a book called "On the Far Side of the Sea," by Charles Wayne Garman.

There is another possible confusion about when he immigrated. Most sources say he arrived 30 Aug 1737 aboard the ship Samuel, where indeed a 28 year-old Johann Jacob Kintzter is on the ships list and took the oath of allegiance as Johann Jacob Kinser. On the same ships list is an additional person--Jacob Kuntz--who is sometimes cited as the immigrant.

Thirdly, another man named Johann Jacob Kuntzler arrived 25 Oct 1738 aboard the ship Davey, and on that same ship was a Johann Nicolas Kinzer. Have these immigrants been refuted as possibly the person represented by this profile?

Johan was born in 1709. He passed away in 1775.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Johann Jacob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Johann Jacob:

Kuntzer-24 and Kinser-50 do not represent the same person because: Different parents, nothing in common

Kinser-65 and Kinser-50 do not represent the same person because: Thy are different people there are two people with same name

Kinser-65 and Kinser-50 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, both born Wolfersweiler, Germany, married to same spouse, same named children. Difference is the parents of John Jacob Kinser, which needs to be resolved.

I agree that these are different men but both are listed as the husband of Anna (Newman) Kinser (1724-1803) which cannot be right. In fact, the marriage record on her profile lists her husband's father as Jacob which is not the father listed for either of these men. More research is clearly needed here.

I've updated the relevant profiles such that they should now be OK for merging. I have de-conflated the 3 profiles that represent this person (Kintzer-8, Kinser-50, and Kinzer-274) from the one that does not (Kuntzer-24).

Kintzer-8 and Kinser-50 appear to represent the same person because: Same first name, middle name, last name, birth year, death year, parents, spouse .

I think that Kinser-50 and Kinser-65 have mixed two families together. One or both of these files may be confused and misleading. They should not be merged without further research.

Kinser-65 and Kinser-50 are not ready to be merged because: I feel that since the 4 parents are different, these people could be cousins. More information is needed to correctly confirm if they should be merged or not.

It is likely that this person should be merged with either Kinser-50 or Kinser-65 since all three married Anna Newman.

Either Kinser-50 or Kinser-65 has mixed with the family of the other. Both are showing marriage to Anna Newman on exactly the same day and location.

Kinser-50 and Kinser-314 appear to represent the same person because: Though not an exact match on all points, the marriage date is exact and the names Anna and Hannah could possibly be the same.

Kinser-433 and Kinser-50 appear to represent the same person because: In spite of minor disagreement in birth and death details, the name, birth location, and name of spouse are close enough to indicate that these profiles are for the same person.

Kinser-433 and Kinser-50 do not represent the same person because: From FamilySearch.com:

There are TWO Johann Jacob Kintzers who came to the US in 1737. This Johann Jacob sailed on the ship "Samuel" and was born 25 January 1709 in Wolfersweiler, Saarland, Germany. He son of Johann Bernard Küntzer and Anna Catharina Seibert. Source:"On the Far Side of the Sea" by Charles Wayne Garman

Johann came to America on the "Samuel" from Rotterdam. He arrived in Pennsylvania on August 30, 1737. Johann was 28 years old at the time. The Captain of the Samuel was Hugh Percy. (The spelling of Kuntzer was changed to Kinser by Captain Percy on his ship's mani-fest.) The passenger list said "Jacob Kuntz". Johann Jacob supposedly migrated with his father Hans Bernard, but his father isn't on the passenger list. Johann Jacob and Anna moved to Montgomery County, Virginia in 1770 or early 1771. He is listed on Walter Crockett's list of tithables. On December 14, 1774 Jacob had about 454 acres of land surveyed on Tates Run in Wythe County, Virginia. They lived there until his death in 1775 or early 1776. Jacob died without a will; however, Elizabeth (Jacob's son Michael's wife) and her children sold 100 acres to Curtiss Grubb in 1832.

Kinser-433 and Kinser-50 are not ready to be merged because: The death date and location for Kinser-433 is backed by both FamilySearch Life Sketch [1] and Find-a-Grave [2]. However, FamilySearch also lists Johann Bernhard Kuntzer as father, which is consistent with Bernhard Kinser. More research is needed before confirming or denying this merge.

Kinser-433 and Kinser-50 appear to represent the same person because: Exact date of birth and same spouse
