Houdenbek Slave Revolt, 1825

Elsje Johanna (Lúbbe) Janse van Rensburg (1776-aft.1843), whose father father farmed at "Grote Valley" near the Olifantsrivier, behind the Schurfteberg range. She was married to Willem Janse van Rensburg, farming at Vaalenkloof, next to Houdenbek, right where the revolt happened, on 4th Feb 1825[7].

The records of the trial at Worcester mention three Lubbe men, "Barend", "Hans" and "Schalk", who might very well have been her brothers Barend Frederik (Lúbbe) Lubbe (1775-1839), Schalk Willemse Lubbe (1781-1863), and Johannes Hendrik Lubbe (abt.1790-1838).

Research Notes

As a result of the fact that he was baptised on the same day as his cousin with the same names (see Schalk Willemse Lubbe (1781-1858)), the profile became conflated with details of both ending up on this profile. In order to correct the situation, the Baptism detail and date of birth will be transferred to his cousin's profile and the correct baptism detail will be added to this profile instead. • Fact: his father died at the farm "Grote Vallei" near the Olifantsrivier. This is in Tulbagh district (Waveren), up on the Witzenberg, possibly the later Friesland fieldcornetcy, west of the Schurfteberg and the Cold Bokkeveld.
  • Fact: Christening (7 October 1781) Swartland, Malmesbury, Cape Province, South Africa
  • Fact: Residence (7 December 1840) Hantam, Calvinia, Cape Province, South Africa
  • Fact: Probate (1863) Spreeuwfontein, Trompsburg, Orange Free State, South Africa

Thanks Benette, I hadn't picked that up. This profile is now obviously conflated with details that should belong to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lubbe-331. I'll do the necessary work to ensure the correct details are added to the correct profiles. The SAG Register doesn't show a marriage to Catharina Brits against either of them - do you by any chance know which one married her ?

I believe I have now sorted out the conflation issue. Please review both profiles to make sure it's all OK now.
