Biography

1666 Birth and Parents

John Maccubbin II was the son of John Maccubbin I and his wife Eleanor. No birth record for him has been found in Anne Arundel County records. His birth of 1666 is an estimate based on the statement in his father's will that he was already above 18 when the will was written in 1686.

Rudolf Loeser lists John, Jr. as the eldest son of John, Sr.. In depositions, John Jr. gave his age as:

  • 50 odd years on 4 Mar. 1717/8 [born before 1668],
  • 61 in 1728 [born ca. 1667],
  • 70 in 1736 [born ca. 1666], and
  • 86 in 1751 [born ca. 1666]. [1]

John's death notice in the Maryland Gazette gave his death on 7 May 1752 as age 88. [1]

Warfield reported that John Maccubin Sr, of the Lowlands of Scotland...came to the Severn with the Howards, [2] He further noted that John Mackubin, Sr, surveyed "Timber Neck" on Broad Creek, Middle Neck Hundred, after 1660. [3] This might be the location of the birth of John Maccubbin II.

We do know that John Maccubin, Sr was living in Anne Arundel County in 1666 when he purchased a 100 acre tract called Brampton located on the South River 13 Nov 1666.

John Maccubbin II had numerous siblings, children of John Maccubbin Sr and his wife Elenor. John Maccubin I named sons John, Samuel, William, Zacharier and Moses in his 1686 will. He named no daughters in the will but other sources name daughters.

He was the son of John Maccubin, the immigrant, who claimed to descend from Kenneth II, the first King of Scotland. [9] Caleb Dorsey of "Arcadia" married Elizabeth Worthington. Her mother was Susannah Worthington nee Susannah Hood, sister of Zachariah Hoods, the stamp agent of the revolution. Susannah Hood's mother was Elizabeth Maccubin (of Zachariah and Susannah Nicholson, daugher of Nicholas Nicholson, and Heseter Larkin and granddaugher of Sir John Nicholson, of Scotland. 1697 Marriage to Ann

John McCubbin married Ann. No marriage record for John Maccubbin has been found in Anne Arundel County records, but the births of all of his children are recorded in St. Ann's Parish together on the same page, 71. [12]

No documentation has been found for the birth or parents of Ann. She is sometimes shown as a daughter of Samuel Howard, but there is no record of Samuel Howard having a daughter named Ann.

If these were the only children of John and Ann, it would suggest a marriage in 1697. If she were born in 1678, she would have been aged 19 when she married.

While no marriage record has been found for Ann and John McCubbin, the births of all of their children are recorded in St. Ann's Parish together on the same page, 71. [13] Eight children were born to John & Ann between 1698-1714:

  1. Samuel b. 20 Jan 1698
  2. Deborah b. 23 Sep 1700

Research Notes

Was Maryland Governor Daniel Martin a Descendant?

Warfield reports that Governor Daniel Martin married in 1816 Mary Clare Mackubin, of Annapolis, a descendant of John Mackubin, of the Severn, a Scottish immigrant, connected by marriage with both Howards and Carrolls. [18]

Who were the Maccubbin Children Named by Samuel Howard?

Marshall shows a John McCubbin married, about 1689 in St. James Parish, to a daughter of Samuel Howard, but with confusion as to her name. [11]

Samuel Howard's will, of 1703, throws considerable light on his family. He named his wife, Catherine; his son Philip; his grandsons John and Samuel Maccubin, and his granddaughter Elizabeth Maccubin, to whom he left L20 each. [19][20]

Howard, Samuel, A. A. County, 28th Feb., 1702; 9th Nov., 1703 [11]

  • To wife Catherine, dwelling plantation (unnamed) and "Brushy Neck" during widowhood.
  • To son Philip and hrs., plantation (unnamed) where he now lives and 120 A. adjoining thereto; also dwelling plantation and land afsd. at marriage or decease of wife.
  • To grandchild., viz., John, Samuel and Eliza: Macubbin, cousins John Howard, Eliza: Norwood, Sarah Brice, Hannah Hammond, Cornelius and Joseph Howard and John Hammond, Jr., personalty.
  • To 3 child., viz., Philip afsd., ex., Susan and Ruth, residue of estate.
  • Trustees: Cousins John Howard and John Hammond, Jr., afsd.
  • Test: Jno. Howard, Andrew Wellplay, Geo. Slocium (Maryland Calendar of Wills, Liber 11, folio 397)

This clearly refers to a different family, silnce Samuel Howard's will was written in 1702 and John Maccubbin, son of John and Ann, wasn't born until 1709. The mystery is clarified by the 1706 bond statement, in which the mother of the three children is identified as Deborah Howard. In the bond, recorded on 15 March 1706, responsibility for three childern is assumed by Thom Tolly, who married Deborah's mother Catherine Warner Howard. [21]

Did John McCubbin Jr marry Susan?

Warfield shows that John married Susan, daughter of Samuel Howard. Warfield adds that John took up "Timber Rock", and left by his first wife John, Samuel and Elizabeth Maccubin, all named by Samuel Howard in 1703. [2]

Loeser and Saunders, however, believe that Susan was an invention of Warfield's and exists in no records. [1]

Was John's mother a Carroll?

Mrs. Elinor Maccubin, widow of John, was, as I believe, of the family of Dr. Charles Carroll, ands James Carroll, of "All Hallows" Parish; both of whom were witnesses to her will, in 1711. Her daugher, ?Sarah Maccubin, became the wife of William Griffith, and the mother of Orlando and Captailn Charels Griffith, of Anne Arundel. [22]

Who Died in 1722?

There is no will for John Maccubbin recorded among the provincial wills of Maryland. There are several inventories and administration accounts, but with so many of his brothers naming their sons in his honor. It is difficult to tell who is who. The earliest inventory is from 1722 and might be his, but the name given is Jno Maccubbins Jr. At this time inventories had to be signed by a close relative and this one is signed by Jon Mackubin and Sal Mackubin. The name junior was used at this time to indicate the younger of men with the same name, not necessarily the son of a man with the same name. The inventory contains the typical goods and is valued at 102.19.2. [23]

John MacCubbin died before 7 May 1752 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, the date his estate was probated. [11]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

The different lists of children suggest a significant possibility of conflation of two or more persons here. I shall keep trying to gather information and arrange it in chronological order to see if any patterns of different individuals begin to emerge.
