Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John May was a North Carolina colonist.

John was born in 1710. He passed away in 1786. This person is not John May, son of Mattox May and Dorcas Abney. He may have been born in Scotland and immigrated to Orange/Pitt County about 1745. More research needed.

John May, Sr

?Virginia,
Orange and Chatham Counties, North Carolina
Richmond County, Georgia[1]

Unknown Wife's Name

According to Ida Kellam in Brooks and Kindred Families, John married Jane Williams, daughter of Roger Williams who was born in Wales.[2] However according to Doug McBroom, publishing in Richmond County Georgia Archives section of USGenWeb, this is the only reference to Jane Williams, and some of Kellam's information is "inaccurate."[1] Kellem does not reveal her source for the name of John's wife, and McBroom cautions that there may be confusion between this and another John May who lived in Orange County, North Carolina at the same time.[1] Note: This is the John May of Orange County which became Pitt County, NC.

Family

John married ______________.[1]

Orange County, North Carolina

John was found in Orange County by about 1752 in the area which later became Chatham County.[1] Apparently he removed with his son, John Jr., to Richmond County, Georgia about 1775.[1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Please review the three John May's attached as sons of Mattox May and merge the duplicates. The two Jane Williams need to be corrected also. Thank you, Mary

There are four John Mays claiming to be the son of Mattox May and Dorcus Abney. Can you merge any of them or disconnect if they are not sourced? Thank you, Mary

May-8892 and May-1681 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same parents

May-1978 and May-1681 appear to represent the same person because: both have the same children, one has an earlier birth date but this is clearly stated as being an estimate, therefore there is no reason the two should not be merged, keeping the 1710 birth date.
If this John May was born in Scotland it seems unlikely that the listed parents are correct.

Unmerged match with May-1681

Death date and place are a match.

Have no idea whether these are the same person or not. So little information on this profile (and no sources). Just reserving the thought until this profile is filled in.

What is the source for the name of John's wife?

Match with May-1681

Same name, birth date is a guess, same children's names, same death place and death date is one year off. Without sources on 1681 it is a little hard to tell, but suspect these are meant to represent the same person.
