for the living persons, their parents or grand parents : people that I personnaly know or that have been reported personnaly to me by people of my family;
for all other persons, datas that have been reported to me by genealogists or people of my family with concordant sources I still have not checked myself or that are reported in a way not up to date, for exemple paroissial register of a place, the registers have been transfered to the departmental archives and I need to find the new references for.
Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.
Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.
Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.
As you have been a member of WikiTree for a few weeks now, I thought I would check in to see how you are getting on with the site.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Happy tree climbing
