Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Robert Page Sr. was a South Carolina colonist.

Robert Page was born about 1753/1754 probably in Goochland County, Virginia, the son of Exol Heath Page and his wife, Christian . He was raised to maturity in Goochland County.

Robert first appeared on the tax list of Goochland County in 1770, with his father, Exol Heath, and continued to be taxed with him through 1773, the year of his marriage. Robert is last taxed in Goochland County in 1782 and is said to have spent a few years in North Carolina before settling in Spartanburg District, South Carolina about 1787.

Robert was married 26 Dec 1773 in St. James Northam Parish, Goochland County, Virginia, as Rob. Page to Rachel Brockman, both of Goochland.[1][2][3] [4] They were the parents of 10 children:

  1. John Page (26 Mar 1777-28 May 1819), married 27 Mar 1796 to Dorcas Smith
  2. Mary Page (about 1778-after 1870), married 1820 to James Lewis Lanford
  3. Joel Page (25 Jan 1779-1833/1837), married about 1802 to Rebecca Moore
  4. James Nelson Page (10 Jan 1781-15 Dec 1856), married about 1798 to [[Rachel Smith
  5. Jesse Page (about 1783-before 1860), married 13 Oct 1810 to Mary "Polly" Arnold, also called Mae
  6. Robert Page Jr. a twin (6 Sep 1784-19 Feb 1862), married on 2 Nov 1807 to Elizabeth Smith
  7. Rachel Page a twin (6 Sep 1784-May 1852), married William Hornbuckle
  8. Christine "Kitty Ann" Page (1789-about 1854), a cripple from birth, never married[5]
  9. William Page (1 May 1790-17 May 1869), married first on 17 Nov 1811 to Anna Smith; married second on 30 Apr 1857 to Milly Wells
  10. Elizabeth "Betsey" Page (about 1790-18 May 1859), married about 1830 to Major Hancock

Robert was living in Orange County, Virginia before 1782 as per a deed recorded in Albemarle County, Virginia. He then relocated to Caswell County, North Carolina. The First Baptist Church records for Jamey's Creek at Woodruff, South Carolina show him in Spartanburg District, South Carolina in 1787, received into church membership as an ordained Elder.[6][7]

Robert wrote a will dated 6 Jul 1817. However, he lived until 1827, when his will is recorded in Spartanburg District, South Carolina.[1] It was proved 12 Mar 1827 by Matthew Allen and James Page qualified as Executor. In the will he gives his wife Rachel Page his plantation of 230 acres with all the other property during her life or widowhood. He refers to his daughter Christian, not Christine. In another reference to her, the name has been written over, so it could be Christine, but later it is clearly Christian. He also makes reference to his daughter Rachel Page "as long as she remains separated from her companion." He also mentions Berry? Clark.[8]
