Biography of Andrew Brown Painter

Three Generations of Painters: Andrew Brown Painter and two older sons and grandson

Andrew Brown Painter was born on December 14, 1874, in Irwin (also called Paintertown), Pennsylvania, the child of James A. Painter and Mariah J. Brown. [1]

Little wonder that the area was called Paintertown, because the Painter family was well established in Westmoreland County going back four generations to Andrew’s great great grandfather John Painter. [2]

Andrew’s father, James was a coal miner and his mother kept house. When Andrew was five, his father’s sister, Susan Deamer and her one-year old daughter Mary came to live with them. Susan was a young widow at age 31 and helped the Painter family by doing household chores. [3]

Over the course of the next 16 years, the house filled with children and also sadness. According to the 1900 US Census, Maria Painter gave birth to 10 children, but only 7 were still living in 1900. [4] It is the author’s believe that some of those seven children lived to adulthood and a couple may not have lived much beyond 1900 because there is no record of anything beyond 1900. Andrew’s siblings were Harry Francis (1876-1958), Nancy Jane (Birdie or Nonna) Painter (1880-1945), Mary (1884-?), Alfred (Alph) Sheridan (1891-1969), Maude (1893-?) and James Howard (1895-1969).

In 1899, Andrew married Eliza Jane Hamilton,[5] the daughter of Phillip Hobaugh Hamilton and Mary Jane Lewis. He had a job repairing railroad cars. Andrew and Eliza had two sons together between 1903 and 1905.

One can only imagine how overwhelmed Andrew must have been. Within one year, Andrew married Clara Rosetta Hamilton, Eliza’s sister. Together, Clara and Andrew had eleven children between 1907 and 1929.

By 1920, Andrew was a foreman with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He owned his home at 647 Sixth Street in Pitcairn and it was filled with his growing family, which consisted of eight children ranging in age from 16 to 5 months. [19] In 1930, the family was complete; Mary was 20 and Lois was one. The two oldest children, Eldred and Burrell had moved out of the house. [20]

Andrew died on July 23, 1950, in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, at the age of 75. [21][22]

He may have been a census enumerator in 1920, his page is completed by an Andrew B Painter. Prior years censuses for the Hamiltons were completed by the Hamilton wife's father, Phillip Hamilton if I recall correctly.

In 1900, Andrew's father-in-law, Phillip H Hamilton was the census taker. His handwriting was so difficult to decipher that years later, the transcription for his son-in-law’s name Painter was misspelled “Panter”.

Twenty years later, Andrew B. Painter was the census enumerator. His handwriting is quite beautiful, each person’s name is written with elegant style and form.

Hello,

There is a findagrave to his father's memorial (11512548). Can you please change that link to the following format?

left-curly-brace left-curly-brace FindAGrave|11512548|sameas=no right-curly-brace right-curly-brace

That will take care of the error of two profiles linked directly to same find a grave memorial.

If you need help please let me know. Thank you!

Painter-311 and Painter-1249 appear to represent the same person because: These two represent the same person because Andrew Brown had two wives. The family members in 311 are those that came from Brown and his first wife. The Unknown Painter has children listed that were the result of him and his second wife. I accidently started a new profile.
