Biography

John Ripley immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

John Ripley was born 14 Aug 1621 in Wymondham, South Norfolk District, Norfolk, England. He was the son of William Ripley and & his first wife Katherine Elizabeth Banks, who died in England. He was baptised 1 Jan 1622 at Virgin Mary and St Thomas a Becket parish, Wymondham, Norfolk, England.[1]

Migration

The Dilligent of Ipswich, John Martin, Master sailed from Ipswich, Suffolk, in June 1638 and arrived in Boston harbor August 10, 1638. The Dilligent carried about one hundred passengers, most from Hingham, Norfolk, bound for Hingham, Massachusetts. Besides the Rev. Robert Peck and his family, were passengers: William Ripley of Wymondham, Norfolk, Mrs. ....Ripley; Mary Ripley; John Ripley; Abraham Ripley; Sarah Ripley[2][3]

John had land granted him at Hingham, MA in 1655. John and his brother Abraham were admitted freemen May 14, 1656. He was granted land in Hingham in 1655, served in King Philips War in 1656 and was garrisoned at Punckapange.

Marriage

John married Elizabeth Hobart[4] on 3 Feb, 1654. Elizabeth was the eldest daughter of Rev. Peter & Elizabeth (Ibrook) Hobart. Like his father, John chose to settle in Hinghams. John resided at the paternal homestead on Main Street, Hingham Centre. John and Elizabeth were the parents of seven children:[4]

  6. Rebecca Ripley
  7. Hezekiah Ripley

Death

John died 3 Feb 1684 (aged 62) in Hingham[4] on the very day of his 30th wedding anniversary.[5]

Daniel Cushing was nineteen years old when the ship sailed, but close to sixty or more when he wrote out the list. Most of the wives are named only as "Mrs.", the children of some families are not listed and there are also some probable errors in the list.

With his father in 1638, where he lived and died. He married Elizabeth Hobart, who was born in England in 1632. She was the daughter of Rev. Peter Hobart, the first minister in Hingham. She died March 26, 1692… Served in King Phillip’s War in garrison at Punckapauge, roll dated June 24, 1676. His will, dated Jan. 21, 1683/4, proved March 27 following. They had seven children – John, Joshua, Jeremiah, Josiah, Peter, Rebecca and Hezekiah.

Is there a source for Elizabeth Hobart's husband being "Joseph" Ripley. All sources I've found name only one spouse, John Ripley.

These profiles each have different mothers listed.

His correct mother is Katherine E. Banks, see my post and source info below from Nov 2014.

I found this article about Katherine Elizabeth Bank's children born before she died. This source mentions Abraham was born to William Ripley's 2nd wife Amia Emmote Jackson.
