William Rippley, the son of William Rippley and Sicely (Row/Reve) Rippley, was baptized at Wramplingham, Norfolk, England on July 14, 1588.[1][2]
William's father, and no doubt his wife and younger children, including William, moved from Wramplingham to Wymondham, about 4 miles south, sometime between 1597 and 1615.[3]
The name of William's first wife is unknown[4][5] and their date and place of marriage are uncertain. Her name does not appear on the Wymondham, England baptismal records of her children, and no record from Hingham, Massachusetts has been found that provides her name.[5] Based on the date of baptism of their first known child (September 1616), they were probably married about 1615. Since William's family was living in Wymondham at the time and his children were baptized there, they were probably married in or near Wymondham. The inability to find a record of their marriage may be due to the fact that there are no Wymondham parish marriage records prior to 1616,[6] probably due to the Great Wymondham Fire of 1615.[7]
William and his first wife had the following children, all of whom were baptized in Wymondham:
There is no reasonable basis for believing that Elizabeth (Ripley) Golding or Richard Ripley, both supposedly born in Lincolnshire and emigrated to Virginia, were William's children.
Daniel Cushing's record (discussed below) states that William was living in "Old Hingham" before emigrating to New England. It is possible that William and his family moved from Wymondham to Hingham, Norfolk sometime between 1630 (when his last child was baptized in Wymondham) and 1638 (when he emigrated). No record has been found that establishes that William made such a move, but it should be noted that there is evidence that his brother-in-law John Beal did move from Wymondham to Hingham sometime in 1631 to 1636,[18] so it is entirely plausible that William and his family did as well.
There is a website that claims that William was born in Ripon, Yorkshire and was not from Norfolk, but instead lived in Moulton, Lincolnshire and had children there before emigrating to New England in 1640. These claims, however, are inconsistent with the record of William's baptism in Wramplingham, the baptismal records of his children in Wymondham, Daniel Cushing's record of his emigration to New England in 1638, and common sense.
Daniel Cushing, resident and town clerk of Hingham, Massachusetts, made a record of the dates of immigration, names, and places of origin of all persons who came from Norfolk, England and settled in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1633-1639. Cushing created the record about forty years after the settlers immigrated. The list is generally in chronological order by date of immigration. After the end of a list entries of persons who immigrated in 1638, he wrote that all of the persons above who came over in 1638 came in the ship Diligent of Ipswich, John Martin, master. Following that entry are the entries for 6 families who immigrated at various dates from 1635-1639, which probably represent additional people that Cushing remembered after creating his original list. This latter list of 6 persons includes the following entry for William and his family:
Cushing apparently realized that placement of the entry for William's family suggested that his family did not immigrate aboard the Diligent and therefore also inserted the following interlineation between the entry for Bozone Allen's family and Mathew Hawk's family so it would be clear that William's family were among those who came on the Diligent:
Charles Banks in Planters of the Commonwealth presents a list of passengers on the Diligent of Ipswich, which includes the following entry for William's family:
The only source cited by Banks for his list is Cushing's record. However, Banks clearly supplemented Cushing's record with information from the Wymondham parish registers and Hingham, Massachusetts records to change their place of origin (perhaps incorrectly) from Old Hingham to Wymondham and to add the names of William's children. There is no original passenger list that contains that information. Banks' assertion that daughter Mary was among the children who accompanied William aboard the Diligent appears to have been just an assumption, based her being the only daughter besides Sarah whose name he found in the Wymondham baptismal records. As discussed in the profile for Phebe Ripley, however, the evidence suggests that the other daughter besides Sarah who immigrated with William aboard the Diligent was probably Phebe, not Mary.
According to Savage, the Diligent left Gravesend on April 26, 1638 and arrived at Boston on August 10, 1638,[22] while according to Banks, the Diligent left Ipswich in June 1638 (perhaps after coming up from Gravesend?) and arrived at Boston on August 10, 1638.[23]
William became a Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on May 18, 1642.[24][11] William was a weaver.[5] He resided on Main Street by the "training field" in Hingham Centre.[5]
The date of death of William's first wife is unknown.[5] She died sometime between 1638 (when she immigrated with him to New England) and September 1654 (when he married his second wife).
William married, second, "the widow Thaxter" on September 29, 1654 in Hingham, Massachusetts.[25][26] According to Savage, she was Elizabeth Thaxter, the widow of Thomas Thaxter.[11] According to both Savage[11] and History of Hingham,[5] she survived William and married John Dwight of Dedham on January 20, 1657/8, although curiously she is not mentioned in William's will.
William made his will on June 30, 1656. In his will, he made bequests to "my eldest sonne Jno Repley" and "my sonn Abraham Riplye". The will does not mention any wife, daughters, grandchildren or other relatives besides sons John and Abraham. The will makes reference to land William purchased of many people, as well as land situated adjacent to various people, including: (land bought of:) Jno. ffoulsham, Thomas Thackster, Stephen Payne, Jno Prince, Jonas Austen, Thomas Underwood; (land adjacent to:) Jno Tucker, north; Jeremy Beales eastword; Thomas Lincorne, west; Nathaniel Beales east; Samuell Ward, eastward; Jno Lasell east; Jno Otis, west; ffrancis James, south; Robert Joanes, north; Cornelius Cantleburry, north west; Mathew Cushen, north; Jno Beales, south; Michaell Pearse, east. Sons John and Abraham were named executors. The will was witnessed Mathew Cushin and John Thaxter.[27][28]
William died and was buried at Hingham, Massachusetts on July 11, 1656.[29] The compilation of "Boston Records" published in the NEHGR in 1859 states that William Reply died in Hingham on July 20, 1656 (the record states the date as 20 : 5 : 56). However, that appears to be incorrect; that date was instead the date the inventory of his estate was taken.[30]
The inventory of the houses, lands, good and chattels of William Riplye of Hingham was taken on July 20, 1656 by Joshua Hubberd and Mathew Hawke and totalled £332.[31][28]
William's will was proved on January 24, 1656/7,[27][28] and the inventory of his estate was sworn to by his son Jno Repley on January 29, 1656/7.[31][28]

Elizabeth Banks was baptized daughter of William Banks "England, Lincolnshire, Parish Registers, 1538-1990," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP34-L6XL : 14 January 2020), Elizabeth Bankes, 15 Nov 1597; citing Baptism, 15 Nov 1597, Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom, Lincolnshire Record Office, Lincoln; FHL microfilm
(There are legacy family trees with Katherine Elizabeth or Elizabeth Katherine Banks Ripley. There is a Katherine Bank baptized daughter of William Bank 29 Sep 1596 in Navenby, Lincolnshire, England "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NGV4-D9N : 21 March 2020), Katherine Bank., 1596.)...So clearly Katherine Banks and Elizabeth Banks are different people but apparently sisters. There is apparently a different Katherine LNAB unknown who marries a William Ripley and has several children baptized at Saint Dunstan and All Saints Church, Stepney, Middlesex, England, which is 108 miles from Wymondham, Norfolk where William Ripley-61 was born.)
Moulton, Lincolnshire, England is only 59 miles from Wymondham, Norfolk, England where William Ripply is recorded as father at Virgin Mary and St Thomas a Becket Church for: (1) daughter Mary, bapt. 6 Sep 1616. (2) female child bapt 7 Feb 1618/19 (3) son John, bapt 1 Jan 1621/22 (4) son Abraham, bapt 9 May 1624 (5) daughter Sarah, bapt 28 Oct 1627 (6) and burial of William Ripply: 28 Jan 1619/1620 https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_queries/60d5a6dff493fda48e01e50a?locale=en (for all of above children, but mother is not named.) (7)There is also a daughter Alicia of William Riply and Elizabeth Banks baptized 18 Apr 1624 and dies 15 May 1624 in Moulton, Lincolnshire. "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JMDT-N7F : 19 March 2020), Elizae Banks in entry for Alicia Riply, 1624. (8) son Johes born to William Riply and Elizae Bankes bapt. 9 Oct 1625 and dies 17 Nov 1625 in Moulton, Lincolnshire. "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JWHP-T7Z : 19 March 2020), Elizae Bankes in entry for Johes Riplye, 1625. (9) or could be same as (6) son William of William Ripley and Elizabeth Blankes was bapt 7 May 1620 in Moulton, Lincolnshire, where he dies 9 May 1620.

Richard was an immigrant to Virginia he doesn't belong. Objections to disconnecting?
Elizabeth also died in Virginia and is not logically a child of this couple. Objections to disconnecting?
Mary???
Similarly Elizabeth Susanna Sharp is a real enough person but there is no reason to believe she was wife of William and should be disconnected from William and children.
Elizabeth Unknown is correct as second wife.
An Unknown Unknown should be created for his first wife, mother of the children listed.
Further the children need to be looked at seriously, but I haven't looked.
"I question the marriage to the first two wives name. Wm. was raised in Wramplingham. A Lincolnshire marriage makes no sense. On a search of ancestry I find over 500 Wm Rippley or Ripley and other spellings all with a unique wife. We need to look closer to home. The second marriage to Sharp(e) - again makes no sense. There was a Sharpe family in York, an Elyz was born to a Robert in 1579... I'm sticking with the four known from the Diligent as a start. In the Ripleygenealogy website cited the writer states there were 4 and Mary was 2 years older than Phoebe. That puts her birth prior to the suspect marriage"
Look at the source for this information. This seems to be. - Oh look here's a William in the right time frame, it must be him.
Torrey's planned article evidently never got published. What a pity.
I think as a start, the baptism date should be removed, and we know he came from England.
Does anyone know if and when the planned publication appeared?
