Jan Crispell, baptized June 21, 1674, married on May 25, 1701, Geertjen Jane Roosa, probably a daughter of Jan and Hillegond (Van Buren) Roosa.[1]
Geertjen was probably born sometime between 1675 and 1680. This is a period where many baptism records are missing from the Kingston register.
Geertje Janss Roos married Jan Crupel in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York, on 25 May 1701. Both were born in Hurley and living in Hurley. It was the first marriage for both. [2]
Children
Children of Jan Crispell and Geertje Roos were (all baptisms recorded in Kingston unless indicated otherwise):
1701. 25 May. Jan Crupel, j. m., and Geerje Janss Roos, j. d., both parties born and resid. in Horle (Hurley). Banns published, but dates not given.[2]
Baptismal witness (in Reformed Dutch Church at Kingston)
Nice work, Richard. That conclusion makes sense. Geertje easily could have been born during a gap in the Kingston records.
From the history of this profile, it appears that Guert and Geertje's profiles were separate at one time, but got conflated together. Since this Rosa-301 profile is mostly about the woman, it might be easiest to retain it to represent Geertje, then create a new profile for her brother Guert/Geurt.
There is nothing relevant from New Paltz. However, judging from the witnesses at the baptisms of Geertje's children it seems very likely that she was a sibling of Geurt (or possibly 1st cousin). With her marriage being in 1701 and husband Jan being born in 1674 I would guess that she was born during the 1670's where so many of the Kingston records are missing.
Ah, profile DuBois-571 names Magdalene's first husband as Gerrit. I foolishly assumed that name came from the records, when in fact it seems to be one of those names that was imputed by later generations (possibly assuming their ancestors had simply misspelled a name that's more familiar to modern ears). If her husband was recorded Guert, that adds support to the idea that he was the child baptized as Guert in 1683. Jan Roosa had a brother Guert who is supposed to have died young, which gives a reason to think that Jan would have named his 4th son Guert.
Although now that I think of it, Guert had died before the move to Readington and Magdalene was with her second husband, so I doubt there will be much to find there. I'll check New Paltz though.
Thanks Ellen. I have already been through the Kingston and Minisink records and am working on Raritan/Readington (that Roosa family went to Readington rather than Minisink), but will check New Paltz also. The birth record of Elizabeth (Hoes #2058) gives the father as Guert Roos and mother as Madeleen du Boys, so it is clear that he used that form. I haven't found any records yet where he is called Gerrit but will keep looking for Guert/Gerrit/Geertje records.
Hmm... Apparently some researchers concluded that the child baptized as "Geurt" was actually Geertje. Recording mistakes like that did happen sometimes (and since the baptism records don't give the child's gender, we can't use gender as a check on the data). And Magdalene's husband was Gerrit -- also different from the name on the baptism record.
Richard, could you start a free-space page or a G2G to compile all of the findable church records and other sources for Roos(a) children from that time period (in Kingston and also Minisink and New Paltz) to see if we can find the missing boy or girl, find evidence to connect Gerrit and Geertje to their birth families, etc.? It's likely that one of these children's baptisms was unrecorded, but it's also possible that a record was overlooked.
There is something wrong here. Geurt is a masculine form. This was a boy child, who became the 1st husband of Magdalene DuBois and is recorded as the father of Elizabeth Roos in 1712 (Hoes #2058).
