NOT Thomas who came on the Mary & John, 1634, with a William Savory. 'He was a liar, a lewd fellow, had a child by an Indian woman. He was in Ipswich and Newport'. Anderson gives no estimated dates for his birth and death.[2]
Biography
Thomas Savery may be the Thomas Savory baptised in Hannington, Wiltshire, in 1574, no father mentioned.[3]
A Robert Savery was buried 1 May 1598.[4] His will bequeathed to widow Joan; his son Thomas and to his brothers Richard, Thomas, and Anthony. Thomas's parents, then, were likely Robert Savery and Joan.
Marriage and Children
Thomas Savory married Mary Woodcocke, 26 Jan 1595/6, in Hannington, Wiltshire.[5][6][7][8][9]
Thomas's will (written in 1646 and proved in 1654) named his 'eldest sonnes' Robert, Thomas, Anthony and John Savery, a daughter Mary Symmonds and a younger son Richard Savery.[10] From the will, the following baptisms are very likely correct (with probable children added from other baptisms):
probable sonJohn Savory (1596-1597) was baptised on 14 Nov 1596 in Hannington.[11] A John Savory was buried on 13 Feb 1596/7 in Hannington.[12]
Robert Savory (1598-) was baptised on 14 May 1598 in Hannington.[13]
probable daughterJohan Savorie (1601-1628) was baptised on 4 Mar 1600/1 in Hannington, the only baptism with the father listed, which was Thomas.[14] Johan's godparents were Willm Edwards, Elizabeth Batson and Thomas Savery snr.[15] Johan probably married Robert Marsh and passed away in 1628.
Anthony Savorie (1605-c.1647) was baptised on 20 Jan 1604/5 in Hannington.[18] Anthony's godfather's were Anthonie Fferis [Feris] of Ashton [Keynes] Kemes and Thomas Mathew, and his godmother was Johan Edwards (image).
John Savorie (1607-) was baptised on 1 Jan 1606/7 in Hannington.[19] John's godparent's were Wat Becket, Wat Weston and Frances Pinell.[15]
Richard Savory (1609-) was baptised on 19 Feb 1608/9 in Hannington.[20] Richard's godfather's were John Harper and Robert Boulton, and his godmother Margerie Mathew.[15] Richard possibly married Dorothy Edwards.
probable sonWilliam Savorie (1613-1613) was baptised on 3 Jan 1612/13 in Hannington.[21] His godparents were William Harper jnr, John Wilkins and Margaret Mathew.[15] A William Savory was buried on 27 Jul 1613 in Hannington.[22]
Marie Savory (1614-) was baptised on 15 Oct 1614 in Hannington.[23] Mary's godparents were Marie Savorie, Joene Harper and William Jackson.[15] She married Francis Symmons.
Burial
No burial is found, but an entry for 1654 (the year Thomas's will was proved) states 'Thomas Savory and Mary his wife were "married" June 19th'. This could possibly be a mistake for their burials.[24] Challenging this is the possibility that Mary's will survives and was written in 1663, then proved in 1668, although she would have been in her 90s (see Mary).[25]
Will of Thomas Savery
The will of Thomas Savery of Hannington, Wilts, yeoman (written 19 November 1646) named eldest sonnes Robert, Thomas, Anthony and John, 12d apiece to be paid within a year; Mary Symmonds my daughter; grandchildren [unnamed] 12d apiece; Robert Savery the younger, my grandchild; sonne Richard Savery; Mary Savery loving wife sole exec.; Thomas Mathew and Richard Clarke overseers. Witnesses Simon Gearing, Margret [Weston?] and William Symmonds. Proved 1 Jul 1654.[26]
Research Notes
Note on Hannington baptisms: Hannington baptisms usually did not list parents at this time, but they frequently did name the godparents.
Thomas is frequently recorded as having children who emigrated in the 1600s; this dominantly comes this a secondary source (written in 1893), with added citations from Family Search:"A Genealogical and Biographical Record of the Savery Families (Savory and Savary) and of the Severy Family... by A.W. Savary, M.A. The Collins Press Boston, 1893: link. The same author changed his mind on a few points a few years later (1905) link.

Savory-66 and Savery-25 appear to represent the same person because: Despite the differing birth places (a mistake on one) suggest merge as they seem to suggest the same person with different spellings of the surname, and have the same spouse with different spellings of the surname.
Hope the edits are not minded. I did it in one go, so it's easy to change back if there are issues.
Note links with the Mathew family. Wills of both the Savery and Mathew families name members of the other family. Thomas Savery was also godfather to Thomas Mathew: https://www.wikitree.com/photo/png/Boulton-883.
This is the preface to the 1905 ‘Savery and Severy Genealogy’ which is a supplement to the earlier work of 1893. See the bottom paragraph where A.W. Savary states he no longer thinks that Thomas and Mary Woodcocke (Woodrorke- aargh!) are the parents of any of the immigrants, but he still thinks there’s a family connection. (I think largely based on the name Anthony and the Hannington connection to Reverend Robert Parker of Newbury. Which could well be a sound theory, but unless something turns up stating someone is overseas etc. I doubt an answer will be found.)

probated 1st July 1654 by Mary . No mention in will or probate of anyone being overseas.
