Hi Bill

I sent you a check-in message a week ago about the US Southern Colonies Project to ask you about your continued involvement but have not yet heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the Southern Colonies project? If I don’t hear from you by the same time next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things but you’re most welcome to re-join the project at any time.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Best wishes,

Sorry, Mary, I missed your prior message. Lots going on with a frosting of illness. Yes, I need to continue as part of the US Southern Colonies Project. I put things here occasionally and there are profiles I can't edit without project access. Thanks!

I have been researching Mary Ann Jones Widner (wife of Giles). I am looking for definitive proof that she is the daughter of John Lawrence. I recently found a tree (typed document) that says she died young and never married. I am trying to find a death certificate — this may indicate who were her parents. The census records indicate that she was from Georgia. That is all I can find — no proof of birth and parents and at this point no grave or death certificate. In this searching I discovered that Giles did not die in 1880. If you look at her census records she is a widow in 1870. Anyway, any sources or other informaiton you have would be appreciated. Thank you!

You are not going to find very many death certificates from the 19th century. Death certificates are a 20th-century invention. Anyway, my tree on Ancestry does state that Mary Ann Jones, daughter of John Lawrence and Lucy Taliaferro, married Giles Widner in Jackson County, Georgia on 29 Aug 1835, which was about 5 years after the death of her father. Unfortunately, while the marriage record is clear by names and date, the name of Mary Ann Jones is fairly common and there is no assurance that the person who married Giles Widner is the same person who was a daughter of John Lawrence Jones. (My great aunt had access to the Bible of John Lawrence, so it is certain he had a daughter, Mary Ann, born 30 Oct 1817.) If you could find a tombstone, and the date of birth carved into the tombstone was 30 Oct 1817, then that would be the closest you could have for a death certificate in the 19th century. Maybe a newspaper report of her death. But I don't even know the location where she died. I have a date of 29 Jun 1880 but I have no idea where that came from (blame my great aunt Nora Jones). On Ancestry, a tree by Harold Widener shows that date and a location of Etowah County, Alabama. But there is no Find-A-Grave entry that I can locate. FYI, Harold is not listed as a DNA match of mine. He might not have taken a test. And there is less than a 50-50 chance of a DNA match with a common ancestor that far back (John Lawrence Jones). Anyway, I have sent a message to Harold to ask about proof that these are the same Mary Ann Jones. I will reply again if I hear something back (which doesn't happen a lot; but maybe we will get lucky).

Pam, thanks. As President of the Hatcher Families Genealogy Association, within the past few years we've proven that descendants of Thomas "of Cobbs" Burton are genetically descendants of William "the immigrant" Hatcher. Our founder, Nel Hatcher, didn't spend any time researching Burtons because she believed that Susannah Hatcher was the daughter of William. No, she was the widow of William's "unmarried" son, WIlliam, Jr., who died young. So, now I'm trying to rapidly come up with research on Burtons which would have been a lot easier decades ago when Nel had dozens of field researchers gathering copies of wills, tax lists, etc. from the colonial era. So, I'll take membership in the trusted list for any Burton you have, particularly if they descend from Thomas "of Cobbs," because that family is part of our Hatcher clan.

Wish I could help..

Howdy Mary!

As President of the Hatcher Families Genealogy Assn. and as an administrator for the Clay Family Society DNA project, I participate in researching "southern" genealogy on a regular basis. Just not much on Wikitree. However, I will make contributions to Wikitree if they arise in the course of my regular work. Project access assists me with updating those profiles which are "project locked."

Sorry for not replying earlier. I've been on the road a lot the past 3 months. I hope to be settled in Mexico in about another month. We settled the lawsuit over my son's shooting death (by cop) and, once his estate is settled, I hope to be out of the US for the next 15 to 30 months while I apply for a visa to bring my new family to the US.

Anyway, that's what's going on with me. Let me know if you have any comments/questions/concerns. Thanks!

Thank you Bill for the reply to the check in. I am marking you as Active. I am so sorry to hear of your son's death. I think time will help you with the grief. One thing, when a profile is "locked" or PPP, it can still be edited. I know as I have 189 Alamo Defenders which are locked. PPP profiles just cannot be merged into another profile.

Good luck with the Hatcher Genealogy
