Biography

Disputed Origins

This profile previously gave John Sharparowe and Helen Margaret Castley as Elizabeth's parents. Following the sources given, the original source appears to be IGI and contains contradictory and chronological impossibilities. These parents have been disconnected. No primary evidence as to her parents has been found.

Birth

Born: About 1605 in England.
Estimate based on marriage in 1626.

Marriage and Children

Married: Chad Brown on 11 September 1626 in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.[1][2]
Children of Chad Brown and Elizabeth Sharparowe:
Please a detailed analysis published in The American Genealogist.[3]
  1. John Browne. Born about 1630. Married about 1660 Mary Holmes. Died about 1706 in Providence, Rhode Island.
  2. Judah Browne.
  3. James Browne.
  4. Jeremiah Browne.
  5. Daniel Browne (possible).

Death

Died: Before 31 December 1672, presumably in Providence, Rhode Island.
She was noted as deceased on this date in a deed of her son John.[3]

Common Errors to Avoid

Disproved son: Chad Brown: Chad and Elizabeth Brown are commonly given a son Chad Brown. This has been shown to be an error resulting from misinterpretation of land distribution in Providence.[3] After the death of Chad Brown, distributions of land continued to made in the name of Chad Brown. A son Chad Brown was created to explain these records; however, it can be shown that Providence continued to set off land in the names of the original proprietors even after their death. There is no other evidence or reason to suppose a son Chad.
Disproved daughter: Phebe Brown: Virkus in his Compendium of American Genealogy made Phebe Brown, wife of Thomas Lee, a daughter of Chad Browne.[4] This is incorrect. She is a proven daughter of William Brown.[3]

The following was sent by the private messaging system, but it really belongs here.

"Re: Sharparowe-1 Was she not Chad Brown's wife, rather than his mother? You have her as b. 1605, Chad b. 1600. Something's not right."

I don't understand what's not right? She is listed as Chad Brown's wife.

I posted a comment on the profile of the person who posed the question; asking for clarification of what's not right.

As the narratives say, Chad Brown Jr is a non-existent person resulting from a misinterpretation of land records. He had been disconnected from Chad Brown Sr. but had not been disconnected from his false mother (this profile). I already disconnected him Cheryl which is why you don't see the problem.

Thanks Joe. I also got a pvt msg from the person who posed the question saying everything is alright now.
I have corrected the AA/NEHGS link and reorganized the source list with the presumably more reliable sources at the top. No primary source is given for birth, birth location, or parents; Melchborne, Bedford, is 60 miles from Elizabeth's marriage location at High Wyborne, Bucks -- a town with its own Sharparowe family -- and I strongly suspect the Melchbo(u)rne birth location is someone's wishful attempt to link these Sharparowes to the Chad Browne of Melchborne for whom an apprenticeship is recorded ca. 1570... but who was born almost half a century too early to be the Chaddus Browne who m. Elizabeth Sharparowe at High Wycombe in 1626. I believe these parents should be removed unless primary evidence to the contrary is brought forward. [Note: parents now removed, 28 Aug. 2018.]

Sharparowe-2 and Sharparowe-1 appear to represent the same person because: they seem to have similar spouse information. Please compare and merge Sharparowe-2 into Sharparowe-1 if you agree they are two profiles for the same person. Thank you. Kitty Cooper-1 Smith
