Isaiah Shockely was born in Pittsylvania, Virginia, a son of Richard Shockley and Elizabeth Meredith Adkins, married in 1754, in Halifax county, Virginia. [1] Isaiah's father, Richard, took the Oath of Allegiance in 1777, [2] and died after 1799, in Grayson county, Virginia. Richard is honored for his Patriotic Service by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as DAR Ancestor #A212755. [3] Descendants of Isaiah and his wife, Ruth, are eligible for membership in the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. [4]
Isaiah married Ruth Ann "Ruthy" Young, a daughter of Ezekiel Young and Ruth Whitehead. They became the parents of as many as a dozen children. [5]
On the United States Census of 1850, Isaiah and Ruthy are both 78 years of age and residing next door to their Son, Samuel Shockley, in Van Buren county, Tennessee. There is an image of the census available to view on FamilySearch.org. [6]
Isaiah died prior to February 5, 1855, in Van Buren county, and is buried in the Big Fork Cemetery, in Cummingsville. According to his Find A Grave memorial, Isaiah served in the War of 1812, and at the time of his death, is son, Samuel was appointed as his administrator of his estate. [7] Ruth died June 10, 1867, in Spencer, Tennessee, and is buried with Isaiah in Big Fork Cemetery.
According to Find A Grave, his birth may have been as early as 1765. Setting year of birth from 1850 census. His son, Samuel was born in 1791, and is 59 years of age on the 1850 census, so it is reasonable to assume that Isaiah was born at least twenty years prior to that date.
