Biography

John Thomas was reportedly born April 16, 1715, in St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland county, Virginia, the son of John Thomas, and his wife, Susannah..[1] Some researchers identify this spouse as Susannah Portis, but the original source for that last name at birth is unclear.

He married the widow Jemima (Powell) Derrick at St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Colony of Virginia, on 10 August 1741.[2] John Thomas and Jemima reportedly had ten children together before she died in 1765.[citation needed]

John Thomas then reportedly married Elizabeth Miller and they had three children together.[citation needed]

He died on September 9, 1793, in Madison, Virginia, having lived a long life of 78 years, and was buried in Virginia.[citation needed]

Research Notes

Disputed Spouse

Some researchers confuse his wife Jemima (Powell) Derrick with her daughter, Jemima Derrick, who was a child a Jemima (Powell) Derrick from her first marriage. That younger Jemima Derrick was just two years old when her mother married John Thomas on 10 August 1741.

Disputed Origins

Some researchers identify his parents as Michael Thomas and Susannah Mosby (e.g., https://www.ancestry.com/genealogy/records/john-thomas-24-2hnglqv). This supposed John Thomas died September 9, 1793, in Madison county, Virginia. That John Thomas has a separate WikiTree profile here.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

The date of death is the same date for a Will written; probated in October for a John Thomas, who was married to an Elizabeth. Children were clearly listed in this Will. The Will is accessed on Ancestry.com. DNA confirmation proves kinship for several of those, if not most, in the Will. The Will can not be confounded by present day people because it is a primary source document written September 1793..

The following message was received by the Virginia Project, forwarded to US Southern Colonies. The upshot of the message is that the currently attached spouse Jemina (Derrick) Thomas is a duplicate of Jemima (Powell) Derrick, with proper LNAB being Powell (Derrick being her last name when she married for the second time).

Full text of the message is:

John Thomas' wife is currently "Jemina (Derrick) Thomas" and should be Jemima (Powell) Derrick. Jemima Powell daughter of Richard Powell and his wife, Grace married 1) Edward Derrick and 2) John Thomas. https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I50368&tree=Tree1 They did not have a daughter Jemima Derrick (who is currently attached as the wife of her father. Additional information is found on the profile for Jemima Powell: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Powell-4710

There are no reliable sources cited on this profile, and Powell-4710 appears to be well-sourced to support these claims, so I am going to propose the merge of Derrick-209 into Powell-4710. If anyone objects, please weigh in.

Jemima Derrick is my 6th great grandmother. Her father, Edward married Jemima Powell who is her mother. So, basically there are 2 Jemima's. One is Jemima Derrick, who married John Thomas III and her mother, Jemima Powell, who married Edward Derrick.

Jemima Powell: Source Information Ancestry.com. Virginia, U.S., Select Marriages, 1785-1940 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc, 2014. Original data: Virginia, Marriages, 1785-1940. Salt Lake City, Utah: FamilySearch, 2013.

They are not the same people. They are mother and daughter.

Thank you for your prompt reply. After doing a little digging, I see that you are correct, Edward Derrick and Jemima Powell did have a daughter named Jemima Derrick. However, the St. Paul parish register -- which is the underlying source for the two Ancestry database records you cited in your reply -- makes clear that the Jemima Derrick who was Jemima Powell's daughter could not be the same Jemima Derrick who married John Thomas in 1741. Jemima Derrick, the daughter of Edward Derrick & Jemima Powell, was born on 6 March 1738/9. This means she was only 2 years old when Jemima Derrick and John Thomas were married on 10 August 1741.

The marriage records for Jemima Powell and Jemima Derrick in those Ancestry databases you are relying upon are both indexes of the St. Paul Parish registers transcribed in the following source:

John Bailey Calvert Nicklin, comp., St. Paul's Parish Register (Stafford-King George Counties) 1715-1798 (Baltimore: Genealogical Book Co., 1962), 18; FHL 1,036,122 item 5, DGS 7,832,652.

The marriages, births, and deaths of the Derrick family are reflected on p. 18, available online here.

That transcription of the St. Paul parish registers reflects the following chronology:

  • 2 Jan 1728/9 – Marriage of Edward Derrick & Jemima Powell
  • 3 Jan 1731/2 – “Elizabeth, dau. Of Edward and Jemima Derrick” born
  • 2 Feb 1733/4 – “John, son of Edward and Jemima Derrick” born
  • 2 Apr 1736 – “Thomas, son of Edward and Jemima Derrick” born
  • 6 Mar 1738/9 – “Jemima, dau. Of Edward and Jemima Derrick” born
  • 27 Apr 1741 – Death of Edward Derrick
  • 10 Aug 1741 – Marriage of Jemima Derrick and John Thomas

So if Derrick-209 is intended to represent Jemima, the daughter Edward Derrick & Jemima Powell, then the current unsourced birth date of "abt 1718" in her profile is incorrect. The parish register records that Jemima Derrick's birth on 6 Mar 1738/9. A birth in 1718 would be 10 years before her parents married on 2 Jan 1728/9.

The chronology from the parish register does, however, support the claim that the Jemima Derrick who married John Thomas on 10 August 1741 was Jemima Derrick, the widow of Edward Derrick. Edward died on 27 April 1741, leaving his wife Jemima a widow with at least four young children. A remarriage four months after Edward's death on 10 Aug 1741 is plausible. Unless there is a third Jemima Derrick in the area at this time, it seems clear that the Jemima Derrick who married John Thomas must be the widow of Edward.

Based on the parish register records, I would suggest that we leave Jemima Derrick (Derrick-209) in place as the daughter of Edward Derrick & Jemima Powell, but correct her birth date to 6 March 1738/9, citing the parish register. She should then be detached as the spouse of John Thomas, and her mother Jemima (Powell) Derrick, the widow of Edward (Powell-4710), should be substituted as the spouse of John Thomas. The children will need to be cleaned up too.

I am happy to take a first crack at these edits, and add the relevant sources from the parish register to all of the affected profiles, if everyone agrees.
