Biography

Jemima Derrick was born on 6 March 1738/9 in St. Paul's Parish, Stafford County, Colony of Virginia. She was the daughter of Edward Derrick and Jemima Powell.[1]

Research Notes

Disputed Spouse

This Jemima Derrick, the daughter of Edward Derrick and Jemima Powell, was not the Jemima Derrick who married John Thomas at St. Paul's Parish on 10 August 1741. Her father Edward died when she only two years old, and the Jemima Derrick who married John Thomas a few months later was her widowed mother, Jemima (Powell) Derrick.

The following message was received by the Virginia Project, forwarded to US Southern Colonies. The upshot of the message is that this Jemina (Derrick) Thomas is a duplicate of Jemima (Powell) Derrick, with proper LNAB being Powell (Derrick being her last name when she married for the second time).

Full text of the message is:

John Thomas' wife is currently "Jemina (Derrick) Thomas" and should be Jemima (Powell) Derrick. Jemima Powell daughter of Richard Powell and his wife, Grace married 1) Edward Derrick and 2) John Thomas. https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I50368&tree=Tree1 They did not have a daughter Jemima Derrick (who is currently attached as the wife of her father. Additional information is found on the profile for Jemima Powell: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Powell-4710

There are no reliable sources cited on this profile, and Powell-4710 appears to be well-sourced to support these claims, so I am going to propose the merge of Derrick-209 into Powell-4710. If anyone objects, please weigh in.

Jemima Derrick is my 6th great grandmother. Her father, Edward married Jemima Powell who is her mother. So, basically there are 2 Jemima's. One is Jemima Derrick, who married John Thomas III and her mother, Jemima Powell, who married Edward Derrick.

They are not the same people. They are mother and daughter.

I've detached Jemima Powell from John Thomas as spouse and added her as mother of Jemima Thomas. However, if Jemima Powell and Edward Derrick didn't marry until 1728, then she can't be Jemima's daughter with Edward Derrick...
See my post on the profile for John Thomas. The Jemima Derrick who married John Thomas in August 1741 does appear to be the widow of Edward Derrick, and is certainly not his daughter.
