Research Notes

Carpenters of Rehoboth and Providence

In the January 2005 issue of The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 159, pp. 43-68, are the following articles revising the Carpenter genealogy:

1. Three John Carpenters: A Chain of Mistaken Identities, pp. 43-53. This pertains to: - John Carpenter of Swansea, 1691-c1754, son of Benjamin, grandson of Joseph Carpenter & Margaret Sutton. - John Carpenter of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, c1667-1753, son of Joseph Carpenter and Margaret Sutton. - John Carpenter of Connecticut, c1694-1768, son of Oliver Carpenter, grandson of Abiah Carpenter of Warwick.

2. Abiah Carpenter of Warwick, Rhode Island and His Family, pp. 55-68. Abiah was a son of William Carpenter of Rehoboth and Abigail Briant. Abiah was the father of Oliver Carpenter, 1667-1727, and the grandfather of John Carpenter of Connecticut, c1694-1768.

3. (chart) The Two William Carpenter Families, p. 54. This is a brief diagram of the families of: - William Carpenter of Rehoboth, c1605-1658/59, m. Abigail Briant; and - William Carpenter of Providence, d. 1685, m. Elizabeth Arnold.

The NEHGR summary at the beginning of Vol. 159, p. 4, says: "Author Gene Zubrinsky gives us two related articles straightening out certain problems with the published genealogies of the descendants of William Carpenter of Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Both articles are complex, but the chart on page 54 will help readers understand the solutions. "In the first article... pieces of the lives of three related men named John Carpenters had been wrongly linked; the author assigns the correct records to each man. "In the second article... the author corrects and augments the previous accounts of Abiah Carpenter and his children.... The second appendix to this article demonstrates that William Carpenter of Providence married Elizabeth Arnold in 1637, after he arrived in New England. [5]

Zubrinsky, Eugene "Carpenter Sketches" - A collection of 12 sketches providing the best documented information on the two William Carpenters families who immigrated in the mid 1630s to America. They are not brothers, they are not the same person, and they are not first cousins. They are genetically related per Y-DNA testing.

Trevelian-1 and Trevelyan-59 appear to represent the same person because: The dates on the unsourced profile are incorrect, but the couple in one merge are clearly meant to represent the couple with sources. I have already proposed a merge for the husband Richard Carpenter.
Thanks, Elizabeth. I've merged the two profiles. It looks like there is one more stray Susanna Tevelyan profile to be merged into this one. Then -- most all the sourcing for this profile is weak to non-existent. I'm going to try to get a copy of the article cited in the New England Historial and Genealogical Register wich may shed some light.

Thanks Jack - I have got a firm marriage source, and the parish registers for Nettlecombe are intact well back into the 1500s so I will scour them tomorrow for a baptism. Richard's will provides good information on their children - I think the difficulty comes in trying to tie them into emigrant families. I'm ok on the English records but don't love getting my feet wet crossing the pond! Cheers!
I looked at the Carpenters on the other side of the pond and I think research there has removed any connection to Susanna and her husband. Your sourcing of this profile completes the picture, and I've taken myself off the profile!

Jack, Can you take a look at this profile? We now have two women by the same name attached to the same parents, should they be merged?

Chichester-411 and Trevelyan-59 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person, but with different LNAB's - Should both be Trevelyan, so need to be merged.

Trivilian-1 and Trevillian-17 MAY represent the same person because -- see Caution. There are a number of profiles for Susanna Trevillian, different parents, different husbands named Richards, etc. The facts need to be straightened out; Eugene Cole Zubrinsky has done the major research in all this and it all needs to be incorporated before the merges take place. Also there needs to be a decision on the most appropriate spelling of Susanna's last name!

Trevillian-17 and Trivilian-1 appear to represent the same person because: Hello, these appear to be duplicate profiles of the same individual. Propose a merger into the LNAB of TRIVILIAN based on the source data contained in that profile. Thank you.
