Hi Stefan, welcome to WikiTree. Could you correct this surname into the conventionally and correctly spelled surname with suffixes (tussenvoegsels) spelled in the lower case: van der Walt", van der Merwe"', du Preez etc.) please. You'll have to correct all the LNAB (Last Name At Baptism) before you proceed creating profiles. WikiTree automatically creates surnames with Capitals even if they are conventionally spelled the continential fashion. See: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Van_der_Merwe-48 (jou stamvader). At this moment I'm working through the baptismal records of the van der Merwe's comparing it to the names in http://www.wikitree.com/photo/pdf/Van_der_Merwe-1402 .... If you need any help, just ask. Hi Philip, your comment still stuck with me, and I just saw an interesting piece written in a section of Quora about the suffixes in South African vs Dutch Suffixes. I now wonder if my surname should in fact be Van der Merwe vs van der Merwe.

The question that was asked: Do Afrikaners (Dutch settlers in South Africa) have distinct surnames from Dutch people?

The answer was: Yes and no. A name like Van der Merwe is rather Afrikaans but when I was a kid our neighbors across the street had that name. I am sure that they never went abroad in their life and spoke nothing but a dialect of Dutch that is now extinct. Sometimes the same name is found in different spelling like Dutch Van Rooijen and Afrikaans Van Rooyen. The capitalization of the preposition van is also different. Jaap van Rooijen would be a Dutchman, but Japie Van Rooyen an Afrikaner. In a telephone directory -do they still exist?- you’d find the first under R, the second under V. In Flanders they side with the Afrikaners on that btw.

There are also a lot of surnames in South Africa that hark back to the French names of the Huguenot ancestors like Labuscagne or Du Toit. You might find Huguenot names in the Netherlands but they are rare. Many of them went to the Cape.

You are now a member of the WikiTree Community. Please note we are trying to build one Collaborative Tree which means one profile per person. It is important to ensure no duplicates are entered as you add Profiles to WikiTree - if you have pre-1700's ancestors to add please read our Pre-1700 profiles info.

If you need any help getting started check out the help section from the menu, top right, or head over to the forum and take a minute to introduce yourself in the Tree House. You might also want to check out the introductory WikiTree video that a member created.

We also have Mentors to help too.

I Hope to add a few bloodlines and perhaps fill a few gaps to the Wikitree database.
I noticed you uploaded a GEDCOM. Here's a link to great instructions on adding a GEDCOM to WikiTree that you might find helpful. If you have any brick walls, collaboration might help bust through. Because WikiTree has only one profile for each person, the further back you go in your ancestry, the more likely cousins will find you and help out. ANY Wiki Genealogist can edit "Open" profiles (over 200 years old = open). There's also a brickwall tag in the G2G forum: brickwall The help pages give lots of information about the process, best to start with 'Before you import a GEDCOM'.
