It is most likely that Godwin ( Godden / Goodwin) Walter was born in Wiltshire, and baptised on 17 Oct 1661 at Froxfield, Wiltshire. His parents were William Walter and Ann Walter. [1]

On the 28 of September 1685, Godwin, along with four others, was witness to a deed from Samuel Noyes of Devizes, Wiltshire to Thomas Martin of Bedwin Magna. Froxfield is 3 miles NE of Bedwin Magna. Devizes is 18 miles W of Bedwin Magna. Thomas Martin was a passenger, with Godwin, on the Unicorn when they sailed for Pennsylvania shortly afterwards. [2] [3]

Godwin, or Goddon, as his name is written in the list of passengers of the ship "Unicorne" arrived at Philadelphia on December 16, 1685, from Bristol, England. Thomas Cooper was the Commander of the ship.[3]

On 27th September 1686 Godwin Walter purchased of George Strode one hundred acres of land situated in Concord Township in Chester, now Delaware County, Pennsylvania. For this tract Godwin Walter paid twelve pounds ten shillings. Tradition says his first dwelling place was a cave in the hillside, near a spring which still flows, though all traces of the cave have disappeared.[3]

Godwin Walter married on 2 September 1696, to Elizabeth Sanghurst, under the care of the Concord Monthly Meeting of Friends, the Meeting being held at the residence of Nathaniel Newlin.[4].

In 1734, Godwin Walter gave a Deed of Gift of all his possessions to his son William, with the understanding that William would take care of all of his needs for the remainder of his life:

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Goodwin by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Goodwin:

Walter-3882 and Walter-2299 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles are duplicates. Walter-3882 will need to be detached from the parents currently attached as they are not correct (see bio and comments on Walter-2299)

Hi Dale, please see duplicate of this profile Godwin Walter. After extensive consultation on that profile, Godwin was removed from Eldad Walter and Mary Blanchard as parents as there is no evidence that he is a child of theirs. I will propose a merge. The merge will require this profile to be also removed from those parents. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss. Kind regards

Hi Kay there seems to be general consensus in the comments below that Goodwin should detached from the parents Eldad Walters and Mary Blanchard, as there is no evidence that they are his parents. Please contact me if you would like to discuss otherwise I will proceed to detach him in due course. Kind regards Gillian

There is no getting around this. Were someone to be presented the evidence at hand, the obvious choice of parents are William and Ann Walter of Wiltshire. There is a baptismal record extant. There is also no mention of his name with Eldad Walter. If there is no objection I recommend he be detached from Eldad.

I am just returning to this line after some absence. Does anyone have a source for the Baptism in the research notes? I am agreeing, right place, right time...

Based on the traditional convention of naming children after grandparents, John and Mary Walter were likely named after the parents of Elizabeth Sanghurst as confirmed in her pedigree. Then later come Ann and William which seems to add more credence to the Research Notes for the pedigree of Godwin Walter from Froxfield.

I've studied Godwin Walter (ca 1661-1735) for many years. Extensive research in maps and deeds of Chester Co., PA (now DE) show a SanghurstSonghurst family living in a small farm adjacent to Godwin Walter during the time of Godwin and Elizabeth's marriage ten years after he arrived in Penn's Colony in 1685. Lacking sources for Godwin's possible marriage to the "other" Elizabeth Sanghurst, a widow returned to Steyning, England, between her and first and second marriage, I put forward the Songhurst name for Godwin's wife with no date attached. William Wade Hinshaw's Quaker records list her surname as Sanguest. I've also spent years researching Godwin Walter and kinship families in Wilkshire. The will of Roger Walter names Godwin's father--William--confirms Roger is Godwin's grandfather, Any insights about this family will be welcomed. (My Bowman family's DNA matches Godwin's descendants 66 of 67 alleles.)

I have been arm-chair researching Godwin Walter for better than 10 years for obvious reasons. I have always had doubts about his parentage, date and place of birth: they do not pass the smell test. First, if he was a witness to a deed 30 days before departing for America, then he had to be known to the community, and not a passer-through. Second, he had to be age of Majority, that is 21 or older at that time. Lastly, he sailed alone to America, something no 10 year old would do. Hence the Research Notes at the bottom of the page is the first excellent evidence I have seen as to his parentage. The places and dates fit. I would place stock in those notes, and excise all references to Eldad et al and Shipley from this profile, because it is a canard. Excellent work!

Hi profile managers. Please could you review the evidence that Goodwin Walter (Walters) is a son of Eldad Walters and update this profile with any primary sources you have. He is not mentioned in Eldad Walters' Will, probate dated 23 Nov 1706. (See Eldad Walters' profile for a summary of the Will). All sources I have found would suggest that Eldad resided in Batheaston all his married life, and all other children were baptised at Batheaston. There is no record of him living in Shipley or other location in England. I will add an alternative baptism possibility for Goodwin / Godwin to the research notes on this profile. Many thanks

Does anyone have a source that documents Goodwin Walter marriage to Elizabeth Sanghurst? I know it is everywhere, but is there a link to a Monthly Meeting or some other official document, or are we all assuming it is correct?

Walters-1067 and Walter-2299 appear to represent the same person because: The Last name is Walter not Walters. These are the same person.
