Rave Review

WikiTree has been my genealogical hangout since 7 January 2012. You'll find there's a lot more than the typical one dimensional family tree building going on here--if you're actively engaged. G2G Forum, Free-Space pages, Categories, Badges, Points, Weekly Photo Contests, User Groups, camaraderie, the exchange of ideas that stimulate the imagination and encourage creativity (and often lead to new or improved features)--you probably get the idea.

I hope you enjoy WikiTree as much as I do because that's a LOT!!! :o)

Tree Tips

First, the default for profiles of living persons is the red lock (click the privacy tab, check the red lock, then scroll down and save). WikiTree really cares about privacy. You, of course, have a choice for your privacy level, but be very careful of the privacy level you set for your living relatives. The relationship finder (click the 'Find' menu and select 'Relationship') works better with a less private setting, but how your relatives feel about the privacy setting is far more important.

Second, enter at least a death or birth date and place for each profile. If you don't know the exact date, estimate using the 'before' or 'after' option. When you search for duplicates, you'll understand why. Many haven't done this which makes matching much more difficult.

Third, try to document and include the source of the document for each profile you create, especially when you get further back in your ancestry. [I'm still working on this one.]

Including this needed information will take time, but it's a good goal to work toward and will make much sturdier branches for the worldwide tree.

Here are some of the free research sites I use.

Following are research help pages created by fellow WikiTreers:

An extensive and international list of research pages Paul Bech has compiled.

Fellow WikiTree greeter, Liz Shifflett, has put together an excellent page, Sources Resources, with additional information and links.

Biography

At seventeen, friends gave me a Bible and I soon became frustrated because I couldn't fill in all the genealogy pages between the Old and New Testaments. As a once-upon-a-time Nancy Drew, Trixie Belden, and Hardy Boys fan, I couldn't let the mystery go unsolved. That was decades ago.

Now a filing cabinet, boxes, and various large, very thick notebooks full of hard copy notes and documents have taken the place of those very small entries in that Bible.

Since a great deal of my research was done before the internet became a viable resource, I'm having to play catch up. Rather than attempting all the scanning and typing necessary to transfer all that material, I'm creating profiles on WikiTree and slowly adding documentation from online sources whenever possible.

Hi Debby, you and I share 88.7 cMs. I do have a grandmother from Alabama. I wonder which of my brickwalls is hiding our cousinship...
