The Scotland Project is hard at work improving profiles for our Scottish Ancestors and we would love you to join us!  The Project covers all things Scottish, so no matter what your interests are, there's a team waiting for you!

You'll begin with a journey down our new Tartan Trail (you can learn more about it here) where you'll not only improve and/or learn new skills researching your Scottish ancestors, but will also meet new people and learn to work within an active, collaborative WikiTree community.  Once you've completed the Tartan Trail, you'll be invited to join other teams within the project that interest you.

Membership Information

If you are new to WikiTree and have not become a full member you will need to upgrade to Wiki Genealogist Level. Sign our Honor Code to receive your Wiki Genealogist badge, which is a necessity for editing profiles. Full details can also be found on the Scotland Project home page. This will also give you a time line of what to expect from the Tartan Trail.

To start your journey, post an ANSWER below!

Don't forget to add the Scotland tag to your profile page

If you leave a *comment* here instead of an *answer,* your comments will be read and then removed. This thread is only for joining the project, and all other questions should be started on a separate G2G post.

Again, please be certain to *answer* above, not *comment.*

Hello, I'd like to do the Tartan Trail please! I've got Scottish ancestors but I'm not confident with Scottish records. I'd like to get more familiar with working on Scottish profiles in preparation for working on my own family.

I am American and many of my ancestors came from Scotland via Ulster or directly. They lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and South Carolina before migrating further north and west. Several lines have brick walls. I have names like Elliott, Johnston, Campbell, and Finley.

I'm just starting my research into my Scottish Heritage Heritage.  Ancesty says that 40% of my DNA is Scottish.   I was really surprised.  BUT, happy to hear.   As I am building my tree, I began to learn which branches of my family are Scottish and I discoverd two.   In particular is the Greer/Grier/Grierson name.  Along with Pressely, Fleming, Airth, Carmicnael.  And there are probably other surnames involved.   My hope is find out whether the chain I'm building is correct.  Also to expand my research.  And get Help

Hello!

I think I joined the Scotland project at some point in the last few years. I am active on Wikitree intermittently. Over the weekend, I was creating profiles for the Connect-a-thon. I encountered a warning when I tried to create profiles for a few people born before 1700. I followed the instructions to get pre-1700 certified, found no matching profiles, and created this profile: [[Skene-436|Alexander Skene (1690-)]]

I understand sourcing and try to provide usable citations. A number of my profiles are correctly sourced. Others - I am still cleaning them up. Honestly, I am concentrating on grandparents and beyond, not my immediate family.

I have no particular questions at this point. However, consulting with a pre-1700 project seems to be required. When I asked about it, I was sent to this Scotland project. So, I am a little confused as to what I should do to follow the rules on collaboration, particularly for pre-1700.

Thanks!

My DNA shows 33% Norse with the Orr name having been in Scotland for many centuries in southwestern Scotland and started by a single patriarch. We assume the Orr was a Viking who settled in Scotland. There is a River Orr and a Lake Orr in Scotland sometimes with the old spelling of "URR". I am interested in learning more about my origins.

Would this group include those who are Ulster Scot?  That's were I am having the most difficulties.  Tracing the Buchanan line from America through Ireland back to Scotland.  There are others lines as well, but I figured this would be the easiest to begin the journey.

Hi Chris,

You're currently number 69 on our waiting list and number 41 has just started on the trail so it may we a while before you hear from us – but we haven’t forgotten you.

While you’re waiting, you might find it useful to work your way through the Help page about sourcing at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Sources and to read the Level One Stream One section on the Tartan Trail Team page at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Scotland_-_Tartan_Trail_Team .  You could even try to add some sources to the profiles you’ve already created – don’t worry, you won’t break the system and anything you don’t like can always be reversed smiley
