This month’s Bio Builders Challenge theme is Veterans of World War I.

You are not limited to profiles on your Watchlist.

Thank you for your support.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section:

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name
  • names of children, if any
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • Some list siblings. (I think this takes up real estate.)
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
  • Categories.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page.

Use "comments" below to ask questions.

NOTE: Biography Builders will not show on the tracker. Please add a list to your answer.

Family search has recently added (this month) lots of military rosters. So it's absolutely worth looking there if you haven't looked in the last week.

This will be a toughie...I am assuming veterans means survivors who fought during world war one? A lot of my family worked at the munitions factories at Woolwich Arsenal instead of serving in the armed forces.

  1. Walter Henry Gordon Mitchell served in The Buffs from 1907-1923
  2. John Alexander Granger was killed in action in 1917
  3. William John Phillpott not sure if he counts as he was a clerk at the gun factory at Woolwich Arsenal from at least 1910 until his death.
  4. Francis Robert Curnick served in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1915-1919. Awarded the Silver War medal
  5. Bertie Victor Ruffus aka Albert Victor Rufus served in the City of London Reserve Battalion of the Territorial Force, then the London Regiment (Finsbury  Rifles)
  6. Thomas Curnick served in the Royal Field Artillery
  7. George Curnick served in the 1st Battalion of the South Wales Borderers, died in combat.
  8. Ronald Curnick served in the Royal Army Service Corps (Expeditionary Force Canteen Section)
  9. Joseph Oxbrough served in the Royal Garrison Artillery

I'm ruled out on this one since I've yet to crack the code of inline sources. I can't seem to wrap my head around all those brackets and vertical lines. I know I'll get them wrong and just upset people. I was fine with footnotes in high school and college, but I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason to these symbols and find the resulting bios very cluttered with numbers midsentence.

I have two that come to mind right away, but they are both fairly complete at this point. Having said that, I expect I can find something to do that will improve them.  They are: William Arthur Shaules (who also served in the Spanish American War) and Joseph Kerrigan who was "gassed" during WWI. That incident eventually was what led to his early death.

I am in, not sure how many I can do as travelling and will have no internet for a couple of weeks. I have several in my tree but most are done or almost done, so will review to double check.

There are a few on the https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:The_Great_War_1914-1918 who have no details if anyone wants to look at these.

  1. Gottfried Abraham  (1894 - 1918)

Also, review https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Under-age_Soldiers_in_the_First_World_War&public=1

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:World_War_I%2C_Active_Duty_Military_Children has 8 subcategories

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:World_War_I  has 63 subcategories to explore.

Have fun everyone

Here is the template that you can use on a WWI veteran's profile to display an image with text, and to add the profile to a category:

{{World War I|country or service branch|start service date|unit(s) served in|end service date|rank=xxx|unit=xxx}}

by Star Kline G2G6 Pilot (723k points)
Thanks Star. I used it.

Had a look at the list on this page (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:The_Great_War_1914-1918) and have found the family of Pvt Harry Leon Abbott and connected him to some maternal ancestors who were already listed on WikiTree.

Not too many of these in my tree:

George Ham served on President II in the Royal Navy.

William Coomer served in the Spruce Division of the US Army cutting Sitka spruce to build aircraft.
