At the moment, native Welsh speakers have to be listed in the drop-down menu as speakers of "Other". For those of us that have Welsh-speaking ancestors, can someone skilled add this to the coding please? I know this question has been discussed before but it needs rectification please if we are going to have one, all-encompassing, humankind tree. Thank you

Hi Leigh. The language selection field is described at

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Language_Selection

It does not refer to the language that was spoken by the person profiled, but rather it selects the language used in automatic suggestions for place names.

The languages offered, like the place name suggestions, come from FamilySearch, and unfortunately Welsh is not one of the languages that FamilySearch offers. So it is not possible for WikiTree to change this; on the other hand, despite the distress it understandably may cause to speakers of the Welsh language, it does not make a practical difference. You are free to ignore the place name suggestions, and enter Welsh place names instead if you wish.

Edited to fix spelling error.

Thank you for your answer. All the best, Leigh
There should be an option to choose Welsh as the language spoken. And it is simple arrogant and not good enough that Wikitree uses the excuse that they have taken the language options from FamilySearch. Surely someone with a bit tech can look into this so we can get ALL langauges listed.

Having ancestors who were subject to the Welsh Not, I certainly agree it is unsatisfactory that FamilySearch and by extension WikiTree do not allow Welsh as an option. But the fact that it's not a question of the language spoken by the subject of the profile does have some bearing.

If that should be an arguement for not including the Welsh language, then it's even more misplaced. Then by default all profiles persons living in Wales should have the language set as Welsh. That off course, wouldn't be right either. But it would at least fit in with it being based on lacation rather than the person.
I agree with all those who have objected to the omission of Welsh as a language. The reason given actually makes the problem worse. Place names in Wales are increasingly standardised around the Welsh / Cymraeg version. Furthermore, the language categories are actually applied to individual profiles. I shall not be contributing any further to wikitree until this is rectified. My email has been changed - I shall informyou of the new email.
