Hello WikiTreers!

The week has ended for WikiTree Challenge #2 in our Year of Community Connections. For each challenge, we are partnering with another group in the worldwide genealogy community. Together we then research seven degrees of connections for seven starting people chosen by our partner.

This week, our partner was the Society of Australian Genealogists. The Society was formed in 1932 and is the oldest family history society in Australia.

Our week began on Thursday, January 19, at noon EST (5pm UTC; 4am Friday 20th AEDT Sydney Australia time) and ended January 26, at noon EST (4am Friday 27th AEDT Sydney Australia time). You didn't need any particular skills to participate, so everyone is welcome to join us. If you did happen to have experience with Australian records, then we absolutely did need your help on this one.

We did our best to show our friends at the Society of Australian Genealogists what genealogy collaboration can accomplish!

You can see the list of participants here. Watch for the Highlights post to see what we discovered!

Note:  Australian start and finish times are for Sydney AEDT and need to be adjusted for other Australian states and territories operating in different time zones.

closed with the note: Thank you for participating! See you for the next challenge.

I'm in for this challenge especially if related to Tasmanian records where I live.
by Sue Wyatt G2G6 Mach 2 (20.6k points)
I love working with Tasmanian records, the Tas Library system (e.g. Names Index) is definitely one of the best. Are you in Hobart? I am visiting there next weekend
Live near the airport in Hobart. Have you been to Tassie before?
That's great Sue! I'm looking forward to working with you.
Yes, I was lucky to visit in December last year, and even got out to the Tas Family History Centre in Bellerive, they were so helpful there!
I lived in Tasmania some 25 years ago, and only recently have been linking immigration records to family records, my first from Van Diemen's land recently. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shaw-14223

While QLD and NSW show images of ship's immigration documents I didn't find them for the Libraries of Tasmania. Would be great to learn more of what is possible in-person.
Hi Ronald,

There are some arrival and departure records on the Tasmanian Names Index which you can search on the main page of Libraries Tasmania. Just put in the name of the person you want to search for and click on names index before hitting return. You then filter for arrivals or departures.

Hey Mindy. I can't say that I'm available all the time, but put me down for who ever is being worked on in Victoria, and I'll do what I can for that week.

For those from outside of Australia helping. Most of our sources are available for free in Australia, so as well as using the usual locations for sources, there is a great list of sources available in Australia too. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Australia%2C_Genealogy_Resources

When working in Victoria, I usually search www.bdm.vic.gov.au/(Victorian BDM), bdmabbreviations.steveparker.id.au/(Victorian place abbreviations for understanding some BDM references), PROV.gov.vic.au (Public Records Office of Victoria for Passenger Lists and Archives.), NAA.gov.au (National Archives of Australia, mostly for War records), Trove.nla.gov.au (National Library of Australia, Newspapers Archives and other documents.), ADB.anu.edu.au (Australian Dictionary of Biography, for stories of significant Australians.), Not to mention all the cemetery sites around Victoria.

Most of these are on the sources page at Wikitree above. Some people may use other sites, and different states will have different sites.

Would be more than pleased to join this.  The 7x7 format is great and allows expansion in many directions.  Currently getting a lot of work in on WT Challenge #1 for 2023

I'm in not sure how this works but happy to have a go. Do we nominate who we're working on so we don't have 2 people attempting to work on the same person at the same time?
by Amanda Myers G2G6 Mach 5 (55.8k points)
Hi Amanda. You'll get an email with more details about how the challenge works. You can also join our kick-off chat in Zoom to learn more or ask questions.

Question from a newbie in these challenges: If you find information do you add it to the actual profile of the person or to the Space page for the challenge?
by Sue Wyatt G2G6 Mach 2 (20.6k points)
Sue, we add our findings directly to the person's profile. Since we are all working together for only seven days, I would say we lean more towards the "Be Bold!" mantra on https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Communication_Before_Editing

On the free-space page we like to add our most Interesting Finds (and vote on them at week's end), note our military veterans, share resources, ask for record lookups at remote repositories, etc.
Karen is right, Sue. You can add directly to the profiles. If you don't feel comfortable with that you can pair up with a buddy and do the editing together.
