The Scotland Project is hard at work improving profiles for our Scottish ancestors and we would love you to join us!  The Project covers all things Scottish, so no matter what your interests are, there's a team waiting for you!

Membership is open to all who have:

  • signed WikiTree’s Honor Code
  • been a WikiTree member for at least 3 months, and
  • made at least 100 contributions to our shared tree

You'll begin with a journey down our Tartan Trail (you can learn more about it here) where you'll not only improve and/or learn new skills researching your Scottish ancestors, but will also meet new people and learn to work within an active, collaborative WikiTree community.  Once you've completed the Tartan Trail, you'll be invited to join other teams within the project that interest you.

A major membership benefit is the Scotland project's Discord server which provides real-time access to some of the most experienced Scottish researchers who can help with your questions.

After completion of the Tartan Trail Level 2, you will be awarded your Scotland Project Badge. You will then be asked to join a team, work with your Team Leader(s) and respond to our annual Project Check-ins. We recognise that people lead busy lives and are grateful for any and all contributions made towards the project's goals.

PLEASE NOTE: if you are just looking for help with specific ancestors in Scotland, and don't wish to take the Tartan Trail and become active in the Scotland Project, then create a new message in G2G tagged SCOTLAND and one of our friendly Scotland Project team members will try to assist you :)

To start your journey, post an ANSWER below!

Don't forget to add the Scotland tag to your profile page

If you leave a *comment* here instead of an *answer,* your comments will be read and then removed. This thread is only for joining the project, and all other questions should be started on a separate G2G post.

Again, please be certain to click *answer* below, not *comment.*

Please add me to the Scotland project. This opportunity is just what I need to jump start my McKinnis family research who migrated to Tennessee in the late 18th, early 19th century.

I would love to join the Scotland Project.  I have many blanks in my own Scotland tree and would love to solve some mysteries.  My ancestors came from the borders area and migrated to Canada in the early 1830's.  Surnames: Amos, Cranston, Ballantyne, McDougall, Scott, Kersell, Hunter, Bryden. . .

Both of my Mother's grandparents came from Scotland and I have tracked them to Paisley, Renfrushire. My Grandmother was a Burns. Her father was John Nesbit Burns and his father was an artist. Her mother was a Porterfield.

My husband's paternal grandparents were also from there and the family name was Glen. I have tracked that male side back to 1790 through Scottish military records. We have both done DNA.

We have traveled in Scotland twice but haven't made it to Paisley yet.

I would love to join this project. For nearly 8 years now I have been very dedicated to researching as much of the Scottish side of my family tree as possible. I have since learned that I have a handful of 6th great-uncles who fought under Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden (MacDonalds of Clanranald regiment). I also have Campbells and Camerons in my tree. And then there is my personal surname M(a)cEachern, which has been a mystery past my 5th great-grandfather. I have also hit a wall concerning some of my Campbell family that I would love to resolve.

I would very much like to get involved in the Scotland Project. I recently uncovered a line in my family tree (we had no information for many years) and through DNA is was able to confirm that my 4th GGM was a Macpherson. I traveled to Scotland this past August and went to Culloden, Inverness and the Macpherson Museum. I would love to learn more and help others.

I would like to join the Scotland Project.  It sounds like a wonderful idea to learn and find more about my Scottish ancestors.  One of my 2023 research goals was to find tartans for my Scottish ancestors, so this would be a great project for me to join at this time, there is so much I do not know about this area of research options.

My father's line comes from Scotland.

Many thanks, Diane
