Hello Poland Project and Wikitree in 2024!  You do not need to be a member of the Poland Project in order to see what we are doing and how you can help with your own profiles.

There are only a few things we would like to share so far:

It appears you DO NOT have to enter in diacritics when searching for a village via the category widget (when you are editing a biography).

I cannot stress enough, to please check if a category is available as you are creating new profiles.  We have no idea if we will ever conduct a comprehensive search of profiles in Wikitree after this first one is finished.  It is very labor intensive.  If there is not a village category available, add the voivodeship or the county ... as those categories will be checked.  You can also message Skye or Tina directly.

*Finished East Prussia Mass Categorization. Tina - Oct 2023

*Finished Podkarpackie & Malopolskie Mass Categorization. Skye - NOV 2023

*Finished Świętokrzyskie Mass Categorization. Skye - Dec 2023

*Finished Lublin Mass Categorization. Skye - Jan 2024

*Finished Podlaskie Mass Categorization. Skye - Jan 2024

*Finished Masovian/Mazowiekie Mass Categorization. Skye - March 2024

*Started West Prussia Mass Categorization, (26 counties). Tina - Dec 2023

*Started KP Mass Categorization (Congress Poland). Łódż will follow. Skye Mar 2024

Thank you!!

Hello ...greetings from the UK!

I'm not sure if you have an area that covers Bydgoszcz yet.

In the future I would like to expand my studies of my father's life and discover more about my Polish ancestors.

I have lots of family photographs, letters and documents to share over time.

My father's profile page

I think a link to the relevant Polish district page would be a good start.

Any suggestions please?

Steve

If you know that you will be uploading a gedcom with many individuals, you can message me after it is complete.  As long as there is a village in the birth, marriage or death location, we can run a search of the village and find all your profiles ... then batch categorize them that way.

If you are slowly adding profiles, find there is not a village category and would like one made immediately to use, you are free to send me an email.  Emails are always first priority.

Thanks Steve!

Hi Skye

Thank you for your answer. I'm still feeling my way around WikiTree and my Polish linage only goes back 3 generations at this stage.

My father

Marian John Serówka was born 1924 in Bydgoszcz

My grandparents

Thomsz Serówka was born 1872 in Wysoka

Marta Marianna Kania was born in Więcbork

My great grandfather

Thomsz Serówka was born c1850 in Wysoka? we think

I guess if I can start by linking my ancestors to their places of birth it will help extend my family research.

As we wrap up 2023, we want to thank everyone for their contributions to the Poland Project ... however great or small! Tina, Skye and Maggie

Please click through to the following page for the December Update. This includes registering for a challenge team for the January Connect-a-Thon.

At a glance (Click the above page for links):

*Poland Project revisited guidelines for membership and provided "teams" for those interested in helping.

*The Wikitree IT team worked with the Poland Project to make it easier to create village categories in Poland by using the Wikitree Bee Extension (Mozilla or Chrome browsers.)

*A new feature unveiled in Wikitree+ allows us to "batch categorize" a large group of people. If you have been transcribing or categorizing profiles, please get in touch with Tina or Skye to learn how to use it.

*May/2023: The Poland Resource Library has been reorganized with new research links added.

*June/2023: Poland Historical Map Overlay. Maps can aid in your research by understanding border changes, tracking migration patterns or tracking surnames, etc. 11/2023 Maps updated with revisions.

*July/2023: Operation Vistula (1947), Victims category created.

*Sept/2023: The cemetery team has new lists to work with:

**Polish Cemeteries in North America

**Jewish Cemeteries in Poland (in agreement with Jewish Roots Project)

**Military Cemeteries in Poland (Polish, American, German, Russian, etc.)

*Nov/2023: Polish Forced Laborers, World War II category created.

*Nov/2023: Polish Forced Conscripts, German Armed Forces, World War II category created.

*Tina and Skye are constantly creating new categories and have been for the past year. With the new tools available to us, we are now able to do this work more effectively (We would love your help! If you are interested in learning please contact either one of us):

Hello Skye, Maggie, and anyone else involved in the Poland project. Thank you for these very interesting links. My focus is on my dad's paternal line because it needs a lot of work (I am Team Leader for Buckinghamshire and the Baldwins are a 'craptangle' as Jo Fitz Henry would say). Nevertheless, I just added a few NEW ancestors on my mum's side (Surdyk-31, Surdyk-32, Psyk-1), who were from Posen, Prussia. I hope I got that location right. That Polish/German border kept moving back and forth.

My sister and I went to Posnan a few years back. I am going to look for a photo or two from that town and add them to the profiles. I only hope I have the locations for them correctly.

Thank you for your important contributions to our Tree. I really enjoyed the Bingo when the Poland Project was presented.

Thank you Carol!  Add the category to your ancestor's profile (Posen or Poznań), open the category as it will have the correct way to have it written while they lived in Posen, Prussia.

There is a Poznan Project (not on Wikitree), but a HUGE effort to transcribe data.  There are links to it in the library.  I hope it helps you! :)
