I'm looking for Fraziers and others with a variant of the name to collaborate in a One Name Study.  The goal is to work together, in order to create a clearer picture of the different groups of people called Frazier and to determine where they came from and who they came from.  Please reply here if you are interested or leave a comment below if you have any questions.

My fathers last name was Frazier but he was adopted by his step father when he was young. From what I know Lewis Frazier married a Choctaw woman (my great 3 x’s grandmother).
I have added the Frazier Name Study category on Benjamin Wheeler Frazier's profile.  Feel free to copy that category from the edit page and add it to other profiles that have the Frazier surname as LNAB.

Here is my Frazier connection:

William is the fourth great grandfather of Jeanne

1. Jeanne is the daughter of Herbert Fair Lunn [unknown confidence]
2. Herbert is the son of Lucy Artilla (Luther) Lunn [unknown confidence]
3. Lucy is the daughter of Martha M. (Frazier) Luther [confident]
4. Martha is the daughter of William Pullen Anderson Frazier [unknown confidence]
5. William is the son of David Frazier [unknown confidence]
6. David is the son of William Frazier [unknown confidence]
This makes William the fourth great grandfather of Jeanne.

Jeanne, I have been working on your Frazier line and I plan on adding it to the Frazier Name Study. Feel free to join the study, if you like.  I believe our lines are distantly related by marriage -- my Garretson line connected through the Frazier line.
Hooray!
I am a Frazier of Choctaw decent, but haven't had anything to do with my Native Family in 18 years or so.

Here's what I've managed to find with the help of my mother and one Native cousin.

The first Frazier I am related to is Sallie Ann Frazier 1875-1920 (Married Moses Belvin)

Her parents were Elsie Payson 1857-1901 and Osborne Frazier 1861-1916

Osborne's parents were Tobias Frazier 1829-1895 and Che-Ma-Le-Hokee 1830-1896

Tobias' parents were Hah-hana Frazier 1805-1850 (father) and Mulsey born 1811 (mother)

I would love to possibly learn more about this particular line

Hi,

I am not a Frazier or any other variant, however, I'd like to draw the one name study's attention to Ebenezer F Johnson Jr (abt. 1800) who reportedly changed his name to Fraser.

The information that he changed his name to Fraser came via email from a direct descendant who then went radio silent on me. See the footnote in the profile. I have that descendant's email address if you're interested. He might be more responsive to a Frazier than he is to a Garrigues given the family histories.

I've done zero research on what happened to him or his family after he changed his name since it's not my family and his "connection" (as it were) to the Garrigues line ended at that point.

Thanks for the info. I will attempt to contact him.
I have a brick wall Frazier family,  Elizabeth Hulda(h) Frazier born October  1812 and a likely Brother Andrew Jackson Frazier born 1816 both in Indiana.  They live next to each other in Arkansas. In the 1840’s and 1850’s.

Their father is said to have died around 1821 on their way to Fort Smith Arkansas. The mother was said to be a renowned weaver with some connections to the medical field as in her father was a doctor that had studied in Europe.  No known connections back to any Frazier family we can find but we have some small DNA matches to the Thomas Frazier family of NC, Samuel Frazier family of TN and a Joseph Frazier in KY.

Living near where Elizabeth and Andrew lived in Arkansas was Manson Frazier, Henry Frazier, and for awhile, Elizabeth and her husband have a Francis Frazier age 18 living with them born in Missouri- that is 1850.

When they move to Texas in 1855, a Wiley F Frazier moves near them and he has a daughter Hulda Jane Frazier.  Wiley and Elizabeth also have a Hulda Jane, and Andrew has a Jane.  Wiley Frazier’s widow then moves back to McDonald Missouri.

I’ve scoured Quaker archives to see if we are Quaker Indiana Frazier’s but didn’t find any Hulda or Elizabeth Frazier’s that are the right age for mine. I’m more or less wondering how Elizabeth could have been born in 1812 Indiana and not been a Quaker unless they are just related to Quakers or her father is military.

Would love to find someone who knows more on this family

The Joseph Frazier family that we have several DNA matches to in Kentucky- he then travels to Fort Vincennes, Indiana before moving on to Missouri and one of his sons is also named Manson Frazier.  I feel like there’s a connection with these names somehow.

Thanks!
I have been working on Frazier my great great grandpa Joseph ervin Frazier

Thanks, Bob. Are all these ancestors on Wikitree yet?
Geez, just caught your question today. Yes they're in wikitree. I've also added some possibly unrelated Fraziers that I came across while hunting Fraziers in the Herkimer area.

I am a Frazier by birth.  Tracing my Frazier family has been challenging due to the numerous spellings.  I'd love to join the Frazier Name Study Project.

I have numerous Frazier profiles in my Family Tree.  Feel free to take a look.

Yes, I have FRAZIER (FRAZER) in my lineage.  SOWELL FRAZIER was born 9 April 1764 in Bertie, NC (info from pension record).  Moved to Granville, NC at 6 mos. of age;  married at 19 (1793) to Temperance Hester.   In 1784, moved to Surry, now Stokes Co., NC.  After first wife died, married Sarah Davis.  Sowell Frazier(Frazer) died on 18 March 1851 in Forsyth Co., NC.

Sandra,

Welcome to the Frazier Name Study!  Curiously, I think I have been recently researching your branch of Fraziers.  I hope to post some of this research on the Frazier Name Study page soon.  I will be interested to look at your Frazier branch.  As you become familiar with WikiTree and the One Name Studies, I hope you will participate in collaboration on our Frazier research.

Edie K
Edie, My branch was fairly easy to trace using clues from Sowell Frazier (Frazer)'s DAR Patriot lineage, combined with the Will of his father, William Frazier I.   His Will indicates that he had 3 wives; 2 had last name SOWELL and were sisters and I believe the last wife, Mary, was also a SOWELL.  He had 10 children (my Sowell Frazier was one) and named them all in the Will, just didn't indicate which child belonged to which mother!  (Note:  One of the children was CHARITY, namesake of my 3rd ggm, dtr. of Sowell). William I (or Sr) was son of Daniel Frazier & Margaret Dawson;  Daniel was son of John B. Frazier II and I think the "B" stood for Bernard m Mary Margaret Faulkner, etc. etc..  I also used info from Ancestry.com which proved to be fairly accurate.  I was able to trace this line to their Royal line to Edward I (Longshanks) & II; Henry II, King John, Henry III and stopped at 1:30 AM because this ran into my Barham (Charity F's husband)'s line.  Of course, this was only one Royal line.  If you have any trouble tracing this line, let me know.  I think it is fairly solid.  I have not had a chance to see if one of these Fraziers, Faulkners, Abbotts, Offley names have documentation w/Colonial Dames.  If so, the Royal line would be unquestionable.. Good luck, Sandra McKinnon Loridans
Sandra, I am looking at your family tree and I do not see the line which leads to your 4g grandmother. Are you able to add the line, so I can see where it attaches to your tree?  Thanks,  Edie K

I have no Frazier's in my line as far as I know (worked with a Fraser in Montreal!), but wanted to mention a possible resource, not mentioned anywhere else here as far as I could see.

   Free DNA Tests - ISOGG

I can't guarantee its availability, and she does have a condition, but it sure sounds very inclusive.

by Rob Jacobson G2G6 Pilot (137k points)
Thanks for the info,  Rob! I checked out the site. She is offering a free Y-37 to any Fraser or Frazer who can prove a Scottish birth during the last 200 years. I assume she means an ancestor with a Scottish birth within the last 200 years.  That could be great for those who qualify.

I will join your Frazier name study.  My Maternal Grandfather was Henry Howard Frazier from Knox County, Indiana.  He was a coal miner and died young, in 1940.
by Lynn Masters G2G Crew (470 points)
Wonderful!  I will add your name to the project and send you more information tomorrow. We can add the Frazier Name Study category to your grandfather's profile.
Lynn, I have added your name as a project participant on the Frazier Name Study.  Visit the Frazier Name Study page at https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Frazier_Name_Study.  There is a link on the top of that page that goes to the category page which lists the Frazier profiles that we presently have added to the study.  Please feel free to add the category to each of your Frazier profiles.  There is an explanation of the project's goals and the page will give you an idea of where we are and how you can join in.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I have Frazier ancestors in my Ballard line. John V. Frazier married Martha Irby in Greene county, Georgia 18 Nov. 1841. He was born in South Carolina. They had a daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Frazier 22 Sept 1844 in Greene county and then moved to Texas. She married, first, Francis B. Burns and second, John Benjamin Ballard. John is my 2x great grandfather.

Would love to join the name study.
by Thressa Paplanus G2G5 (5.1k points)
Thressa,

Welcome to the Frazier Name Study!  I will add your name to the participants in the study.  I would suggest that you study the Name Study Page at Space:Frazier_Name_Study and look at the various projects.  A good place to start work is to add the category to each profile with [[Category:Frazier Name Study]] and the birth and death locations of each profile with [[Category:State, Frazier Name Study]].  Those profiles are then listed on the category page.  For the ancestors who migrated from Europe to the New World, I consider those our main profiles of interest and I like to put the Frazier Name Study template on those.  You can see how that is added on the space page.  If  you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks,

I'm happy to help research Frasers who lived in Québec.  My brother-in-law descends from Peter Fraser, who helped settle Green Isle (now Île Verte, Québec) circa 1800.

by Greg Lavoie G2G6 Pilot (371k points)
Greg, thank you so much for your offer to research Frasers who lived in Quebec.  I have run into Fraser lines who migrated to Canada and would appreciate help with those lines.  Please feel free to add the category [[Category:Frazer Name Study]] to any of those profiles.  Also, I guess we need to start a new category for Canada profiles.  Please feel free to set up that category in the Frazier Name Study, or I will as I have the time.

Thanks!

I have a Fraser brickwall.  Elizabeth Fraser/Praser/Prazer (Fraser-6076), who was Irish, married an Irish military man John Abraham Odlum/Adlum (Odlum-36), who was serving in the British Navy.  Their children were born in Africa and Gibraltar.  I think Elizabeth may have been a daughter of one of Odlum's commanding officers.

My mother was born Frazier.  I was able to trace her paternal tree to Thomas Frazier, Solomon Frazier and then John Frazier who seems to be an indentured servant who made his way from the Carribean to Virginia where the above mentioned Fraziers settled and had families.  I have not found John's father.
by Priscilla Floyd G2G Crew (940 points)
Priscilla, I looked at your tree and I don't see a source for John being an indentured servant on his profile. Do you have one you can add?
I do have a source.  His travel records.  I will find them them and add them.
That will be very helpful,  Priscilla!

I'd like to add a 7th ggf Alexander Frazier (d 1750, Chester, Pennsylvania) to your study. There's plenty of family lore saying he's Scottish in origin and he's attached to entirely speculative parents in Scotland -- but not one shred of evidence.

by T Stanton G2G6 Pilot (374k points)
Yes, he is added to the study and research notes are included indicating we need more research on his birthplace and date. Perhaps someone with access to records in Scotland can find more info to give us a definitive answer. Or immigration records or something.
I am planning on adding this whole line of Fraziers to the study. I guess I was waiting on a little more research on which person is the emigre from Scotland...and the time.  I will add that Alexander as the first to emigrate to the Colonies and hope for substantive proof as we go along.
Adding to the research of Sheena Tait added to the profile, the Alexander Frazier in the colony is not literate and signs documents with his mark. Had he been the son of the writer/lawyer in Edinburgh Parish he would in all probability have been literate. I've not yet proposed detaching the parents marked Uncertain but I think it is near certain that they are not the parents based on the simple literacy issue.
That is a very logical conclusion and probably enough to make that change. I am not one of the PMs, so you might message them for comments on the change.

I am a Frasher. My DAR Frasher/Frazier relative was Micajah Frazier (Mcager Frazure - various spellings) He was born in Albemarle County Virginia Dec. 25, 1753 according to his Rev. War. Pension Application Affidavit. He has a great progeny out there and we are all trying to find his parents. There are many inaccurate parental listings for him on ancestry.com. I am working with my father who has done the Big Y dna test through Family Tree DNA. I would welcome any info on Micajah or how to trace my dads DNA to Scotland or Ireland.
by b Frasher G2G Crew (350 points)
That Frasher is profile Frasher-59 [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Frasher-59]. I have done quite a bit of work on that line because I think it is possible the ancestor to my brick wall may be on that line. Micajah Frasher is quite an interesting fellow. It would be great if we can tie your line into Micajah's line. As you add ancestors back, just connect into the line at the appropriate place. If the line is missing people and you have the research to plug some holes, please add the appropriate profiles. You might consider becoming a member of the Frazier Name Study project. One of the goals of the project is to track the family lines back to Europe, especially Scotland.
My Fraser line was Frazier in 1817 then changed to Frasher in early 1800s by census enumerators.  My 4xGGfthr was born in WVa and settled just across the OH River in Meigs Co.  I have noticed that unrelated Frazier families during that time in OH also had their Frazier spellings changed on the census forms to Frasher or Frayser.

I have done research to confirm whether or not there is any connection between my family and Micajah Frasher's family but there doesn't seem to be any that I can connect at this time.  However, I would be interested in stay in contact as I am at a brick wall and haven't been able to get past my 4x great grandfather Lewis Frasher (not the same one as in Micajah's family).

Have a great day!

Fraser/Frazer in Scotland is spelled both ways. My guess is that the "z" used to be a yogh which is an old Scottish letter that looks like a "z" but is more an aspirant "Frayer". The Frazier variant appears to be a North American thing. I haven't seen any Frazier spellings in the UK.

As to your question about your ancestor, the 78th Fraser Highlanders were stationed in Quebec during the Seven Years' War and the French and Indian Wars. They were disbanded in Quebec and a lot of the soldiers (named Fraser) married local girls and settled in Quebec. Some of those women may have been First Nations. One of the big economic activities in Quebec was the fur trade. Quebec traders could be found down the Mississippi and along a lot of the navigable waterways. It's quite possible your Louis Frazier was the grandson of one of these men. Louis is not a Scottish first name but Lewis or Ludovick is.

My third great grandfather is William Frazer who served with the 71st Regiment of Foot in Portugal and Spain. I keep wondering whether a Spanish cousin is going to show up.

Just my theory.

Elizabeth Russon
by Elizabeth Russon G2G6 Mach 2 (28.6k points)
You are certainly right that the spellilng "Frazier" is an American spelling. The earlier spellings in the States are usually Fraser and Frazer.  For the Frazier Name Study, there was already a Fraser Name Study, so I couldn't use that name, but that study has been incorporated into the Frazier Name Study.  Our study covers all different spellings for Frazer/Fraser/Frazier. I have found Frazers of whatever spelling very early in the settling of this continent, many in the Colonies as well as in Canada.  Chasing them back to Scotland is very difficult since it seems they are all Williams, Alexanders, Jameses, Thomases and Johns. That is one of the goals of the Frazier Name Study: to track our ancestors back mainly to Scotland and Ireland. We use Family Groups to separate the numerous lines. Any help you can give us tracking these numerous Frasers back to Scotland would be much appreciated!!
Yeah, the Scottish naming pattern is very hard to overcome. I had an easy ride as William's father was Charles! But his father was James. A lot of them were also merchants which means they could be found anywhere. My James Frazer was "lately from Bombay". He also attached himself to John Kennedy, Earl of Cassillis as principle servant. Cassillis was a Jacobite and my Frazer disappeared leaving a widow in Greenock. Not sure if he ended up in the USA or just died leaving no record.
Maybe DNA will help us to solve the mystery someday.

I am a Frasher (previously Frazier c. 1817).  I am interested in participating.  My Frazier family originated in Virginia (possibly W.Va).  Settled in Pomeroy, OH.  Census enumerators changed the spelling to Frasher in ~1840s. This family moved to Missouri and, generally speaking, all Frashers  in this state are descended from the original family.

Here is my direct line as far back as I can reasonably get it, then I hit brick walls:

1.  Lewis Frazier b. 1817 WV d. Sweet Home, Clark Co, MO ?/?/? -m- Mary J. Bailey b. 1819 d. Sweet Home, Clark Co, MO ?/?/?

2.  Thomas Jefferson Frazier (Frasher) b. 1842 Meigs Co., OH d. 1878 Sturgeon, Boone Co., MO -m- Caroline Clark (Odam) b. 1840 Athens, Clark Co., MO, d. ?/?/? (likely Boone Co., MO)

3.  Lewis Clark Frasher b. 1/12/1871 Alexandria, Clark Co., MO d. 2/11/1963 Boonville, Cooper Co., MO -m- Charlotte Isabel Parrish "Lottie Mae" b. 1877 Linn Creek, Camden Co., MO d. 5/13/1955 Jefferson City, Cole, Co., MO

4.  Thomas Marion Frasher b. 7/13/1905 Shawnee Bend, Camden Co., MO d. 12/14/1983 Jefferson City, Cole Co., MO -m- Vera Mae Turpin b. 6/27/1914 Amarillo, Potter Co., TX d. May 4, 1996 Jefferson City, Cole Co., MO

5.  "Living Mother Frasher" Jefferson City, Cole Co., MO -m- "Deceased Father Walker" Jefferson City, Cole Co., MO

Sounds to me that your Frazier line could very possibly descend from the Robert Frazier that was on the Lewis and Clark expedition.  He was born in VA and after the expedition he settled in MO (I think the St. Louis area).  The expedition was put together by Thomas Jefferson for Lewis and Clark to explore to the Pacific coast. Clues could be a son named Lewis Clark and another son named Thomas Jefferson Frazier. I would definitely be trying to find out. A longshot worth betting on.
