Barbara Ann Emert is the daughter of Frederick Emert and Barbara Anna (Neidig) Emert. "In Goodspeed's History of Tennessee it is mentioned that Frederick Emert and Martin Shults were among the earliest settlers of Sevier County after the Treaty of Dumplin Creek in 1785 in which the Indians relinquished their rights to land, part of which included the area of Sevier County. It is mentioned that Frederick Emert and Martin Shults settled in an area which is today known as Emert's Cove, in Sevier County, Tennessee. Martin married Fredericks daughter Barbara Emert in 1797. Martin Shults Junior was commissioned as a Captain in the militia for Sevier County, Tennessee. Emert's Cove is now called Pittman Center." [1]

Martin died November 1, 1846, and Barbara is found living with their son John R. Shults in 1850 census of Emert's Cove. Barbara died September 23, 1875 and is buried in Emert's Cove Cemetery, Sevier County, Tennessee.
