Research Notes

Notes:

The Maggards are of Swiss/German origin. Hans and his brother left from northern Germany to America in early 1700 when they were in their late teens. Hans settled first in Pennsylvania, (per agreement circa 1620, Virginia was considered an authorized area to be settled), then going into Augusta, now Rockingham County, Virginia.
Farmer, surveyor bridge builder. Immigrated to Philadelphia then to Lancaster (York) Co., PA where he was probably married, removed with family to the Shenandoah Valley of VA.; furnished supplies for the Continental Army in the Rev. War. Will recorded in Augusta (Now Rockingham) Co., VA Mar. 24, 1783.
Hans brought his family into the The Valley along the Shenandoah River of the Blue Ridge (he was one of the earliest settlers) about 1726. He raised livestock, partly in order to obtain fertilizer, rotated his crops, raised wheat and made whiskey. The early Maggards were evidently prosperous plantation owners. Hans furnished supplies for the Continental Army.
There was a path called "Maggards Path" running from Hudson to Tottopottomays Creek in Hanover Co., VA. in 1720. Hans road hands were to work on a road from Shenandoah River to the top of Blue Ridge, dated May 20, 1752. There is a small peak in the Blue Ridge mountains called Hans Mountain.
The will of Hans Maggard (John) is recorded March 24, 1783. Here he is listed as a German immigrant of Augusta Co., now Rockingham Co., VA.
Hans and his son, Samuel sold 300 acres of land on the south side of the Shenandoah River in 1745 to John Fitch. On Feb. 9, 1749, this land was in a chancery suit for clear title with John Fudge.
