Biography

Lydia’s maiden name is believed to have been Ratliff although this has not been proven. She was born in 1718, Augusta, Colony of Virginia.

Lydia married John Elswick around 1740 and had four children with him: (1) Mary (born 16 Nov 1741); (2) Lydia (born 25 Mar 1743); (3) John (born 20 Sep 1745); and (4) Jonathan (born 12 Jan 1747). The names and dates of birth of their children are recorded in the diary of Archibald Thompson who married their daughter Mary.

John Elswick died in Augusta County VA around 1748 leaving widow Lydia with 4 children under 10. There is a May 1749 Augusta County VA order that states: “On the motion of Lydia Elswick . . . certificate is granted her for obtaining letters of administration of the estate of John Elswick . . . with Robert Ratclief and Ebenezer Westcourt her securities . . .”[1]
At a Court continued and held for Augusta County the 28th day of November 1750
"This Inventory and Appraisement of the Estate of John Elswick dec'd returned unto Court is admitted recorded"[2]

Following John Elswick’s death, Lydia married Jacob Lorton. The diary of Archibald Thompson records the birth of Jacob and Lydia’s children: (1) Israel Lorton (born 4 March 1749); and (2) Rebecca (born 23 June 1754). Given the uncertainty of John Elswick’s date of death and the birth of Israel Lorton on 4 March 1749, it is possible that Israel was the biological child of John Elswick and was raised by Israel Lorton as his child, but this is only a possibility and Israel could be the biological child of Jacob Lorton.

Lydia died in October 1798 in Montgomery, Virginia, United States, aged 77.

Ratcliffe-1315 and Ratliff-403 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents and name. Lydia Ratliff wife of Jacob Lorton was conflated somehow with the wife of Jacob’s father, Israel Lorton, and given a Lydia Ratcliffe profile. Israel’s wife is said to have been named Rebecca but her name is unknown.

Something has got a bit mixed up with two daughters named Lydia Ratliff (Ratliff-403 and Ratliff-1315) in the Robert Ratliff profile. It looks like Israel Lorton Sr’s wife has been conflated with Lydia (believed to be a Ratliff but not proven) who married Israel Lorton Sr’s son, Jacob Lorton.

The below is from Israel Lorton Jr’s Find-a-Grave entry which gives details of Israel Lorton Sr, his children and their spouses. Other than Lydia’s relationship with Jacob Lorton, I have not researched the Lorton family and thus cannot vouch for the accuracy of the below.

~ ISRAEL JACOB LORTON, JR. ~ _______________________ "Israel Jacob Lorton, Jr." (1727 VA--1808 IN). _______________________ HIS PARENTS: ~"Israel Jacob Lorton, Sr." (1701 England--1752 VA) Married in 1723 in VA to: ~"Rebecca ?" (abt 1695--?).

THEIR 4 CHILDREN:

~ "Thomas Lorton, Sr." (1724 VA--? 1756 VA); He had 2 sons, John & Thomas, Jr., from his 1st marriage to a lady whom I have not located. 2nd m: Widow Elizabeth Bentley m: Moss. Francis Moss died in 1742. She brought her 2 minor children with her to her new marriage to Thomas Lorton, Sr. in 1745. She had a son (Robert) with him.

~ "Israel Jacob Lorton, Jr." (1727 VA--1808 IN); m: Sarah ? in 1743 VA. They had 4 children. ™ Israel Jr. served in the Rev. War under Daniel Trigg's Company of Militia of Montgomery Co., VA in 1777-1778 & 1781. ™

~ "Jacob Lorton" (1728 VA--?); m: Widow Lydia Ratcliffe m: Elswick. John Elswick, Jr. died in 1749. She brought either 2 or 4 children to her marriage to Jacob Lorton in late 1749. She had 1 or 2 children with him. ™Jacob served in the Rev. War under Daniel Trigg's Company of Militia of Montgomery Co., VA from 1777-1778. ™ (Lydia's Son, John Elswick, III, also served in the same company during the Rev. War as her brother-in-law, Israel Lorton, Jr., & her 2nd. husband, Jacob Lorton. When Jacob married Lydia in late 1749, John III was 4. This son was known as "War John Elswick".)

~ "Sarah Lorton" (1732 VA--1802); m: Jacob Harmon, Jr. in 1751. This Harmon & his family members were associated with the Lorton men in many transactions & dealings.

Something has got a bit mixed up with two daughters named Lydia Ratliff (Ratliff-403 and Ratliff-1315) in the profile of Robert Ratliff and Mary Alice Touchstone Ratliff. Lydia (believed to be a Ratliff but this has not been proven) was born in 1721 and died in 1798.

She married 1st John Elswick (Elswick-98) and had children: Mary (born 16 Nov 1741), Lydia (born 25 Mar 1743), John (born 20 Sep 1745) and Jonathan (born 12 Jan 1747). John Elswick died around 1748 leaving widow Lydia with 4 children under 10. There is a 1749 Augusta County VA order that states:  “On the motion of Lydia Elswick . . . certificate is granted her for obtaining letters of administration of the estate of John Elswick . . . with Robert Ratclief and Ebenezer Westcourt her securities . . .”. Lydia subsequently married Jacob Lorton and had children Israel Lorton (born 4 May 1749) and Rebecca Lorton (born 23 Jun 1754).

Lydia’s year of birth and death, and the names and dates of birth of her children with John Elswick and Jacob Lorton are set out in the diary of Archibald Thompson who married Lydia’s daughter Mary.

It would seem as though Ratliff-403 is the correct daughter profile but needs the inclusion of her marriage to Jacob Lorton and children with Jacob Lorton. It seems as though Ratliff-1315 is either a different person entirely married to an elder Israel Lorton, or a combination Lydia with the wife of the elder Israel Lorton.

This is not in my direct line, so I am not familiar with this profile and would be glad if someone wanted to take it over.

Ratcliff-1109 and Ratliff-403 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates and place; same husband.

Nancy (born 1776) cannot be a daughter of John Elswick and Lydia Ratliff, because John Elswick died in 1748 or 1749. However, they might be Nancy's grandparents, if she was a daughter of John Elswick III and Susannah Radcliff.
