Biography
The biography for Donald Atkinson- I was conceived in Fairbanks, Alaska while my father was the Army base head electrician from 1952 to 1954. He then was transferred to Fort Knox where I was born in Nov. 1954. He was discharged in Jan. 1955 and we returned to South Charleston, WV where he and my mother grew up. We lived there for a couple of months and then moved to 16 mile creek in Mason, WV. We stayed for two years then moved Nitro, WV. After another two years, we moved to Charleston, WV where my brother was born in 1958. Our family then moved to New Jersey where my sister was born in 1960. We moved back to Cherry Street Charleston, WV soon after and lived there while our new home was being built in Poca, WV- at that time called Handshaw Addition. We moved there June 2nd, 1961, just one day before there was a major flood in Charleston where many people died. There was about 8' of water that devastated the area we had just moved from. I started school that fall at Poca Elem. and Graduated from Poca High School in June, 1973. I went to WVU to play football where I stayed about 2 months and decided I needed to transfer to play as a freshman. I left WVU and went to Shepard College, who won the WVAC conference the year before. I played on Defense. I left after one year due to injury and returned to Poca. I married in 1975, and got in the Electricians Union in 1976. My first daughter was born in 1977. I graduated from the IBEW Apprenticeship Program in 1980. I divorced and then remarried in 1982. My second daughter was born in 1988, and my third in 1991. In 2004, I divorced again. I had a great and successful career as an electrician, and retired in 2014. I have had two knee replacements-mostly caused by playing football.
