Biography

Derrick/Dirck D. Volkertson was born in 1667 in Bushwyck, New York to his parents, Volkert and Annetje (Phillips) Dircks. Historically, his birth may be referenced as either New Amsterdam or New York, as it was in this year that the Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam to the English, who promptly renamed the city to New York. He and his siblings were second generation born in the New World. Derrick/Dirck was the oldest of 11 children, and grew up in and around the Bushwyck area.

In 1689, Derrick/Dirck was given a position as ensign of the town of Bushwyck militia. He appeared to be doing reasonably well financially, as there are records of him loaning money to his Uncle Jacob Dircksen/Dircks. He married the widow Marie Dewitt at the Reformed Dutch Church of Flatbush on 25 September 1691. By 1692 his firstborn, Volkert Volkertson/Derrickson was born in Bushwyck. Derrick/Dirck is also recorded as serving in the grand jury that same year.

By the 1698 Census, Derrick/Dirck had a wife, three children, and two slaves in his household. Records show his sons Volkert (1692) and Peter (1695) would have been counted in this number, but the third child on the census remains a mystery. There does appear to be some indication of a Sarah Volkertsen born circa 1700, but little evidence of her exists and she would have been born too late to be counted on the 1698 Census. However, a few sources show her as being born 1698, so it is possible.

By 1700, Derrick/Dirck and his family moved from the Bushwyck area across the bay to New Jersey, and purchased land on the Millstone River (Millstone, Somerset County, New Jersey - west of New Brunswick). Derrick/Dirck's daughter Annetje was born in 1705 in New Jersey. His wife Marie/Maria then died around 1710 at the young age of 39. Her grave location is not known.

Around the time of his first wife's death, Derrick/Dirck had begun a business venture with brothers Phillip and Nicholas, opening a mill on the Millstone River. Derrick/Dirck soon thereafter met and married Jenneke Schouiwten on September 27, 1710, returning to New York City to be married in the Reformed Dutch Church in Flatbush. Derrick/Dirck and Jenneke were married through around 1723/1724, when she passed away around the age of 28/29. They had no children together.

Derrick/Dirck then married Geertje Zynieltse around 1723/1724. Together, they had four more children - Deborah (birth date unknown), Hannah (birth date unknown), Mary/Marie (b:19 November 1722), and Dirck (b:19 November 1727). Dirck was his last child to be born to his family.

Derrick/Dirck wrote his will on 4 November 1752, and indicated at the time that at the age of 85, he was "weak in body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory", so he appears to have aged well even though old age was taking its toll on his physical body. He passed away on June 22, 1754 in Millstone, New Jersey, and his will was proved on 5 August 1754. He was buried at the Weston Burying Grounds.[1]

There are several related to Dirck who need to be merged, but there are issues due to conflicts or other concerns. These are:

- Volkert-2 and Volkertson-5 (Dirck Volkertson)

-- Volkert-2 appears to be connected to the wrong father. If this is resolved, we should be able to complete the merge.

- Volkerse-6 and Volkertson-12 (Peter Volkertson)

-- Same as Vokert-2, but no merge proposed yet

- Volckertszen-2 and Folkertsen-3 (Nicholas Volkckertszen)

-- Brother of Dirck, merge appears to have stalled as a rejected match, needs to be resumed and issues resolved

Any thoughts on these? Especially eventual LNAB and potential conflicting parents or other conflicting data points?

Volkers-2 and Volkertsen-3 are not ready to be merged because: I think there might be some ancestral issues concerning the spelling of the LNAB to be sorted first, though the two profiles are obviously a match.
