The 1850 Census shows Sanford at age 16 working with his father as a farmer in Richford, Franklin, Vermont.[4] But, sometime between 1850 and 1859 the whole family moved to Wisconsin, along with other families from Vermont. The area in Wisconsin in which they settled they named Richford, after where they had come.[5] They were farming in Richford in 1860.[6]
On January 25, 1865, Sanford married the young Cornelia Mudget (1849-1902).[7] The marriage did not last as Cornelia had a child with her second husband in 1867. (See Cornelia's profile.) In 1870, Sanford was living with his parents, farming. They lived next to his brother Luther and Luther's family.[8]
By 1880 Sanford had moved to his own farm in nearby Coloma, Wisconsin.[9]
He married Rosella C. Keeler in 1881 in Wisconsin.[10] Interestingly, they remarried in 1885.[11] Perhaps, a divorce had gone through with his first wife in between those dates. Sanford and Rosella had eight children, but a daughter Blanche (b. 1888) had died the day of her birth, and the last child, born in 1900, Violet, also died the day of her birth. [12] In 1885 Sanford, Rosella and their first two sons were living in Coloma.[13] The last three children were all born in Richfield, Adams, Wisconsin,[12] where Sanford owned a farm, as shown in the 1895 state census [14] and the 1900 census.[15]
After the death of baby Violet, Sanford and Rosella separated on December 20, 1901.[12] Sanford and Orno went to California for Orno to attend nursing school. They both contracted tuberculosis there and Orno had to leave nursing school[19], so they went to Kansas, where they were enumerated in 1905.[20] Rosella married again to widower Henry Hartley in 1904.[21]
Sanford was living in Fargo, Kansas in 1909, where Orno and Orlando were farming.[22] Austin was also nearby.[23] By 1912, Sanford was living at Route 1 in Haynes, Kansas.[24]
Sanford passed away in 1919 in Seward County, Kansas, at the age of 84. He was buried in the Liberal Cemetery in Liberal, Kansas.[25]
Research Notes
Sanford also seemed to have owned land in Nebraska or to have at least loaned money to someone to buy land in Nebraska, as there is notice of a foreclosure in Ord, Nebraska.[26][27]
No census record has been found for Sanford in 1910. However, based on the newspaper clippings and the census records for all of his children, he was likely living in Kansas.
