Charles Bridges aka Carel van Brugge or ver Brugge
This man, an Englishman, called Charles Bridges, visited New Amsterdam as supercargo of the ship White Haven, coming from the West Indies in 1639, an ln 1644 he was appointed Member of the Council and Storekeeper in Curasao where he was first called Carel van Brugge. He came to New Netherland with Stuyvesant, in May, 1647, was made Commissary at Fort Orange, November, 1647; Commissary of the Provincial Accounts in 1651; and Provincial Secretary and ex officio Vendue Master[One who is authorized to make sale of any property to the highest bidder, by notification and public outcry; an auctioneer[1]] in 1652. He held the office until November, 1653, and appears in various official positions during the next years. When the English took New Netherland he resumed his English name, [Charles Bridges] appearing under it as one of the patentees of Flushing With the return of the Dutch in 1673, he became again Carel van Brugge, and was appointed Clerk of the English Towns on LI. now Queens Co., residing at Flushing, where he died in August 1682. His wife was Sarah, da. of Thomas Cornell of Westchester, often called Cornelis and widow of Thomas Willett of Bristol England [her second husband]. She survived him [d. Charles Bridges, who had come over from Canterbury, England, and had taken an active part in the Dutch administrative affairs of Curacao and New Netherland, even changing his name for a time to Carel van Brugge or ver Brugge. His wife was Sarah Cornell daughter of Thomas Cornell of Cornell's Neck. She was the widow of Colonel Thomas Willet when Bridges married her in November 1647. After the death of Bridges she was married a third time to John Lawrence jr.of Flushing. Bridges and his wife succeeded in a suit against Thomas Pell at the court of assizes on September 29, 1665, for possession of the land on Cornell's Neck from which Thomas Cornell had been driven "by the barbarous violence of the Indians who burnt his House and Goods and destroyed his Cattle." --- Innes.
