Biography

Mary (Thompson) Wise immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Birth

Baptized: 14 November 1619 at Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England. [1]

Marriage and Children

Married: Joseph Wise on 3 December 1641 at Roxbury, Massachusetts.
'Joseph, and Mary Tompsonn, Dec. 3, 1641'.[2] [3]
Children of Joseph Wise and Mary Tompson:
  • Joseph Wise
  • Jeremiah Wise.
  • Sarah Wise.
  • Mary Wise.
  • John Wise
  • Henry Wise.
  • Bethiah Wise.
  • Katherine Wise.
  • Benjamin.
  • William Wise.
  • Benjamin Wise.
  • Abigail Wise.

Death

Died: 4 August 1693 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts.[3]

Errors to Avoid

Death Date: Said to have died 27 November 1651 in Roxbury. There is no evidence for this and it does not appear in the Vital Records - date is unsupported. She was also having children through 1666.
Disputed husband: She is often said to be the Mary who married the Rev. Richard Blinman. This is a very complicated problem addressed by David L. Greene F.A.S.G in 1983. His conclusion ultimately was to accept that Mary Tompson had married Joseph Wise in 1641 as published in 1980 by Robert Charles Anderson, and that the wife of Richard Blinman remained uncertain.[3][4] Greene tentatively identifies the wife of Richard Blinman as a daughter of Robert Parke, and so a step-sister of Mary Tompson.

This person immigrated to New England between 1621-1640 as a Minor Child (under age 21 at time of immigration) of a Puritan Great Migration immigrant who is profiled in Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Directory (or is otherwise accepted by the Puritan Great Migration (PGM) Project).

Are there no records of when Mary Thompson and her mother Alice (Freeman) Parke immigrated to the colonies? They are my 10th and 11th GGM and trying to keep track of dates. Thank you.
Apparently not. What seems to be one of the most well researched sources (TAG 87:215 https://www.americanancestors.org/DB283/i/60616/215/0) says Alice and "at least 2 of her daughters" were in Roxbury by 2 April 1640 when a complaint against "Alice Tompson, widdow" was drawn up (primary source for that court complaint here https://archive.org/details/notebookkeptbyth00lech/page/618/mode/2up). A bit surprising this is not on the profile of Alice.

A question about where Mary Tompson and Joseph Wise got married. The upper part of the profile indicates that they were married in Braintree. The "Marriage and Children" section below the profile indicates they were married in Roxbury. I found verification for Roxbury in the following source: Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988. This makes sense given that both Joseph and Mary were living in Roxbury prior to the wedding date. Can the Braintree location from the profile be fixed?
