Biography

John Ufford immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
  • The son of THOMAS & ISABEL (BRYAN) UFFORD, he was baptized on June 11, 1626 in Nazing, county Essex, England. He was brought to New England in 1632 on the "LION" by his parents and settled with them in Milford, New Haven Colony.
  • He married first, Hannah Hawley, in 1656, daughter of JOSEPH & KATHERINE (BOOTH) HAWLEY. Hannah divorced him shortly after their marriage on the grounds that he was "unqualified for the marital relation". She then married Capt. John Beard, son of my ancestors, JAMES & MARTHA BEARD.

The biography section seems to have some incorrect info about Ufford's migration to America. The Ufford family did not settle in Milford upon their arrival in America. Based on info found on Thomas Ufford's wikitree page, the family arrived in Roxbury in 1632, and later moved to Springfield, MA in 1636, and then Wethersfield, CT in 1641. In 1644, they were part of a larger party of settlers which settled in Milford.

You are correct, Timothy, that the family was first in Roxbury, etc. This profile needs work to bring it up to the standards for the Puritan Great Migration Project. Can we encourage you to become a full WikiTree member and collaborate on developing this profile?
