Biography

Buckinghamshire (historic flag)
John Waller IV was born in Buckinghamshire, England.

Dr. John Waller was born about 1645 in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England and is the presumed son of Thomas Waller (1610-1682) and Anne Keates.

Dr. John Waller entered St.Catherine's College in Cambridge, England where he received his degree in 1667, which in the record is printed as an MB vs MA vs MD.

As Dr. John Waller appears to have been a "Master Surgeon" (vs Lawyer) this may be an erroneous transcription of the degree [1]

Marriage

Dr. John Waller married on 13 Jan 1669 at Walton, Buckinghamshire, England to Mary Pomfrett [2] [3] (1648-1716).

  • Per Dr. John Waller's last Will, Mary Pomfrett was a cousin who lived with his wife - speculation as to if this was a close relative to his wife "Mary Pomfrett, now deceased" (perhaps a companion/caregiver; not unusual for this time period).
  • It is likely Mary died before the 1716 Will as she was not named as a beneficary or an executrix; daughter Jemima inherited all (un-entailed) personal property and goods and was Executrix of Will; son Benjamin was the primary Heir and Executor; son Edmond was a Dr. in Cambridge; son William was a Minister at Walton (nearby parish).

Death

Dr. John Waller died about 1723 Newport, Pagnall, Buckinghamshire, England; buried in the family vault that he had built for son James at the cemetery of the Church of Newport Pagnell, England (vs 05 Aug 1723 St Giles, Cripplegate, London, England). The parish records there do not show a baptismal or a burial record for him. [4] [5] [6] Note: Regarding statement "The parish records there do not show a baptismal or a burial record for him. " is incorrect. A digital copy of the original parish record of his death/burial exists and is available on Family Search in his profile. Additional Note: The digital image of the parish record appears to have been lost or removed. A transcription of that record along with added information has been added to this site under Burial.''' ===Burial===

  • 1658/Jun/23 He was Apprenticed to the Barber Surgeons' Company.
  • 1664/Jun/10 He was admitted to St.Catherine's College in Cambridge, England
  • 1665/Feb/06 He was "admitted to Freedom".
  • 1667 He was awarded an "M.B." degree.

  • 1716/Aug/21 He made his last Will.
  • 1723/Nov/06 His last Will was proved (P.C.C. 248 Richmond).

Discrepancy

  • Dr. John is sometimes confused/co-mingled with his son (the Colonel) John. Note that while the Colonel went to Virginia, the Dr. did not.
  • No original source records have been located to confirm birth, marriage or death records. It appears that some erroneous information may have been published, and perhaps republished / reported, making the “actual facts” obscure. There is a great deal of conflicting information; Several Source-to-Source discrepancies; co-mingling, Lack of records; conflicting family stories; number of Wallers with the same names, etc. See additional research notes at Waller Research

There are existing source conflicts.

Paternal Line

There are some serious doubt on the actual parents of Dr. John Waller. There appears to be a number of "multiple lines/marriages" during the 1500s. This issue may never be satisfactorily resolved. [14]

  • The last Will of Anne Keats named two sons ...
- John Waller, of London, England merchant [15]
- Edmund Waller, Esq., of Gregories in County Buckinghamshire, England.
  • Since Dr. John Waller, Gentleman (d: 1723), apparently lived his entire adult married life in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. England; and was trained and worked as a doctor, it seems logical and obvious that he is not the same person as Anne Keat's son, John Waller, merchant of London, England who occurs in records of 1695 and 1706.
  • The Cambridge Alumni directory incorrectly states that the father of this John was John Waller , a clothier, of Braintree ... but "nearly all" of the writers on Waller genealogy have agreed that Colonel John Waller, of "Endfield", (later of "Newport") Virginia was the son of Dr. John Waller, of Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, England.

Disputed Spouse

Conflict between Mary Key (or Kay) vs Mary Pomfrett ...

  • Widely reported to have married Mary Key vs Mary Pomfrett.
  • The marriage of Dr. John Waller to Mary Key is disputed / discredited by the research of Robert M. Allen. [16]
  • The marriage to Mary Pomfrett is proven / supported by the Parish Register [2] [17]

Contemporary Mary's

Several separate Mary's have been identified ...

- Mary Pomfrett (widow) m: Dr John Waller. Incorrect. No proof that Mary was a widow . A transcription of the marriage record on Family Search shows the groom addressed Mr. and the bride Mistress. These are titles of respect and has nothing to do with the bride being a widow. Most of the transcriptions of the marriage records fail to include Mr. and Mrs when used. This failure is a good example of why it is a good reason to view the original document.

- Mary Waller, daughter of Dr. John and Mary Pomfrett, d: @2yrs. Death Record located in England so cannot be a wife.
- Mary Waller, m: Zachery Lewis [daughter of Col. John] (proved / supported by Wills)
-Mary Waller, m: Edward Herndon
-Mary Pomfrett, cousin of Dr. John Waller
-Mary Key

Will be glad to help see if we can reproduce these.

Also, should be MB suffix, not Dr. prefix. Parents should be detached or at least marked uncertain.

I don't understand how John Waller IV had a father named Thomas Waller. It seems his father would be named John Waller III.
