Biography

SUSANNA BOKESON [1] [2] [3] [4] was born probably about 1612 in England[2], if she was of an average age (23) when she married ALLEN PERLEY[3] about 1635 in Ipswich [Boxford], Essex, Massachusetts[1][2][4] [5] [6] [7] Her husband Allen was born about 1608 and an immigrant from Wales. [7][4] The matriarch of the Perley Family in the new world died on 11 Feb 1691/92 in Ipswich, a widow of sixteen years, but little else is known about her.[1][2][5][3] She was also called Susanna [BOKESEN / BOKENSON / BOLDERSON].[2][5][4]

Her husband ALLEN PERLEY[1] first arrived in Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts in 1630 (came with Winthrop's fleet)[2]. He relinquished his settlement there and returned to England for some reason before 1635.[4] During this visit he acquired a certificate of conformity from St Albans, Hertfordshire, England, and on 02 Apr 1635 he departed from London, England (Age: 27; "husbandman Allin Perly," enrolled on the "Planter" as a passenger for New England).[1][4] This time he arrived in Boston on 07 Jun 1635 (his return Arrival) and his first residence was in Ipswich by 1636[1][2][4]. Admission to the Ipswich church was obtained prior to 18 May 1642 as implied by freemanship (as "Allen Pearley").[1] [2] [8] His Will, dated 23 Jun 1670, was amended on 16 Nov 1671[1] to explain his desires should Susanna remarry and his death was on 28 Dec 1675 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.[1] [4] Susanna Perley was his named executrix and attested to an Inventory taken 19 Jan 1675/76[3] which totalled £320 2s. 6d., of which £237 was real estate (against £15 2s. of debt). [9] [10]

Torry lists the marriage of SUSANNA BOKESON and ALLEN PERLEY in 1635 Ipswich.[11] In 1635, Ipswich included all that area north of Salem bounds, as far as the Merrimac River, and from the ocean west as far as the line which divides Boxford and North Andover. A record of this union is found in the Boxford town records.

The couple lived in Ipswich/Boxford after their marriage and had the following seven children:[1]

  1. John Perley was born about 1636 in Ipswich (deposed 28 Sep 1669 "aged 33 Yrs") and died on 15 Dec 1729 in Boxford, Essex, MA ("in his 94th year").[12] He married Mary Howlett (1642—1718) about 1661.
  2. Samuel Perley was born about 1639 in Ipswich, Essex, MA, was married to RUTH TRUMBLE on 15 Jul 1664, and died there in 1669.
  3. Thomas Perley was born about 1641 in Ipswich (deposed 20 Nov 1662 "aged 21 years", on 28 Sep 1669 "age 28", and on 20 Jul 1675 "aged about 34"). He married 8 Jul 1668 in Rowley to Lydia (Peabody) Howlett, widow of Thomas Howlett.
  4. Nathaniel Perley was born about 1643 in Ipswich and died there on 29 Apr 1668 at age 24.
  5. Sarah (Perley) Watson was born about 1648 and married William Watson on 15 Jan 1670/71 in Ipswich.
  6. Timothy Perley was born about 1655 and died on 25 Jan 1718/19 in Ipswich ("in his 65th year"). He was married to Deborah _____ before 1682 (their eldest known child born 28 Mar 1682).
  7. Martha (Perley) Coker was born about 1658. She married Benjamin Coker on 31 May 1678 in Newbury, MA

After spending nearly their entire lives in Ipswich, Allen and Susanna (Bokeson) Perley were received into full church fellowship and joined the [Ipswich] church on 12 Aug 1674.[8]

The earliest know Perley in Maine was the 2x Great Grandson of Allen & Susanna Perley. Rev. Samuel Perley (1742-1830) was born in Ipswich, MA but died on 28 Nov 1830 in Gray, Cumberland, Maine. The references below to "CIVIL, GRAY, CUMBERLAND, MAINE" are all questionable. This is an unknown location. Wikipedia describes the history of Gray as a town in Cumberland County, Maine, but no one lived there before the 1730’s. This area was granted in 1736 by the Massachusetts General Court to a group from Boston and the first settlers did not arrive until 1738. The unnamed settlement was twice wiped out by Indians before Fort Gray was built in 1755 and in about 1756 it was being referred to as New Boston. This New Boston Plantation was incorporated as "Gray", after a proprietor named Thomas Gray, on 19 Jun 1778.
